@rdouglasmead24 күн бұрын
I'm not sure "rip off" is the right way to put it. Tolkien certainly had many influences. Eru and the angelic beings were influenced and inspired by various European mythos as well as his own Catholic/Christian faith. Eru is, to Tolkien, middle earth's version of God. These other beings are basically angels, but they do have some aspects of deities from pagan european mythology. Artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers...any creative person, really...can't help but be influenced by things that came before. As Shakespeare said, there is nothing new under the sun. Tolkien was quite open about his intent to create a long-form epic in the vein of the sagas of the early middle ages and the viking era. Scholars have gone into great detail studying and writing about Tolkien and his various influences, so your "discovery" that these characters have inspiration in pre-existing myth is no great insight.

Tolkien himself said his books were "catholic". So, you´re right.
@MaxHohenstaufen23 күн бұрын
A lot of Tolkien's work is inspired by christianity, norse mythology and even greek mythology, like for ex numenor is clearly inspired by the myth of Atlantis, Rohan and Edoras are inspired by viking culture and the creation of Arda and the rebellion of Morgoth is inspired by christian tradition wherein Lucifer/Satan rebels against God. Are you just now taking notice of this well known facts?

Read the Silmarillion and you'll understand. Eru commanded the Ainur to sing a song which created Arda ( Middle Earth) and showed them a vision of what they created through their song. Before then, the Ainur didn't have the gift of sight and were amazed by what they had created. They were then told by Eru that what they were seeing was just a vision, and that they must descend into Arda and create the world that they had seen in the vision. Eru also showed them a vision of the "Children of Illuvatar" which Eru ( Illuvatar) alone had created. The Ainur were amazed and filled with joy and excitement at the coming of the Firstborn (elves) and the Laterborn (men). ( it's been a while since I read the book. They may have been called the Secondborn.) The Ainur that descended into Arda were called the Valar. Their purpose was to prepare Arda for the Children of Illuvatar. The Valar were so excited about the coming of the Children of Illuvatar that the Valar Aule created dwarves in secret before Illuvatar had placed the elves in Middle Earth. Illuvatar immediately knew what Aule had done and scolded him for exceeding what the Valar were permitted to do. Aule explained that he was filled with love for the Children of Illuvatar and had created the dwarves because of his impatience. Then, being ashamed at having disobeyed Eru, Aule raised his hammer to destroy his creation and the dwarves recoiled in fear. Eru stopped Aule before he could destroy them, forgiving him for violating his command. But he put a deep sleep upon the dwarves until after the elves were born in Middle Earth. It's been many years since I read the Silmarillion and I'm writing from memory. I'm sure that I got something not quite right, but that's the gist of it. The Valar took the forms of men and elves at times because of their love for them.

@HerrPierre29 күн бұрын
Besides what has already been said, Melkor wasted so much of his energy that he became trapped inside a physical body, so that he could actually be killed, just like Sauron and the Balrogs, and unlike the other Valar, who wore a physical body but could dismiss it whenever they wanted to assume spiritual form. In fact, Melkor was even injured in battle by a simple elf, never fully recovering from his wound.

Take it up with Tolkien, he described Melkor as the most powerful. If it helps, there’s often a clear difference between the most powerful and the most physically strong in Tolkien’s work.
