I'm a ME who invites people over Thursday nights and WE study the Holy Bible together. Those who are interested are welcome. I've had the same 5 gals for years now and a few new ones that came and went. I don't expect a thing back from them except to be polite guest. If they are weary from the day, they are told to just show up and get refreshed and encouraged. What I do is out of love without expecting anything in return, (enter patient endurance, trying not to feel used). There was a little bit of wondering at times. Even my husband suggested out loud others join in to do dishes. But that was not my call, I did not agree. What resulted is nothing short of beautiful, powerful. We have true fellowship. What obligation has anyone but that they love others? This is the difference between 'relationship' and "religion" and a free will offering vs a forced tribute. What ever you do, do it unto God as if it is Him visiting you, as if it was him you work for. God is Love and we respond to it because HE first loved us and gave HIs life for us.

I'm from Taiwan, and In my experience it's about finding balance. collectivism could lead to passive agressivness, and often abuse, people(who is being abused or who witness one)afraid to speak up because of what others will think of them or judge them. also could stop one to pursue their dream, just to make others happy, or to pursue other's dream for them. often people see a car crash, and nobody go to help, I think its because of fear or what other would think of them(don't want to stand out) or don't want to embarrassed the people who are in the crash.

The key is to practice both, and in some ways, we already do. On a macro level, it has to be WE. However, being responsible for yourself has to be instilled from the getgo.

TY for this information. This video was made before the COVID-19 pandemic and outbreak of wars in Eastern Europe, Northern Africa, and Israel-Palestine. I don't think there clearly exists a demarcation between "me" and "we" societies anymore. Our world has become so geopolitically and environmentally unstable that the "we" philosophy is becoming more dominant in all parts of the world. While we, Americans, still pride ourselves in our individualism, we are adopting many aspects of the "we". Large group gatherings are often seen in parks and restaurants where I live. The concept of "family" is broader than it used to be. Our Immediate families are considered anyone who is in our circle of life, i.e.parents, siblings, close friends, neighbors, and trusted work colleagues are our "family" these days. We're not to the same level of "we" as our Asian counterparts, but we aren't too far behind coming out of the pandemic. I think the hardest part for me is remembering that there are significant cultural differences that are still in place. I traveled to several countries in the past and enjoyed most of the cultures I experienced (i.e. all except for Italy). I've been to the UK, Germany, France, China, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Belize, Canada, and Australia, My business took me to many places across the USA. In each place, I found elements of both the "me" and "we" philosophies at the same time. I haven't traveled since the pandemic, but I don't think this duality is as rigid as shown here since the global disease forced many people to change how they live their lives. There's more of a philosophical blending.of the two extremes that's taking place today. And as climate change and politics make the world more volatile and immigration increases, 'we" societies will become the only way to survive. Again, TY for this discussion. It's an important one needing more of my own understanding. I sometimes forget that there are cultural differences that must be acknowledged and respected. 👍🤔

Even collectivist cultures do allow some degree of individualism. There is just a more emphasis on societal cohesion. Collective cultures are not usually totalitarian and they should not be perceived as such. I actually find individualism more totalitarian than collectivism because although we have freedom we receive little to no support from others and we are pressured to adapt to the dominant culture just in order to survive and live a normal life.

Western life is so much easier than the East. With larger population and limited resources, life is hyper-competitive in the East Asia. In the US and Europe you can learn trades and start small businesses and be able to make comfortable living, but the in East Asia without prestigious education life is a nightmare. Achievement standards for everything are extremely high and nearly impossible for achieve for most of the population. Work hours are extremely long. Highest real estate prices in the world.

Is American culture for real me me me me me or instead is it strength based during the belief that each member's contribution to the team is what makes that team work well together. When each person on a team is earning as much recognition as possible from the people at the top instead of competing with themselves to grow how is that necessarily automatic going to be benefiting the whole of that community? For example a person from any kind of American background would be competing with themselves when it comes to honing their own listening skills to be looking for the best in others.

I’m gonna be honest, a lot of this didn’t make much sense in comparison with how the world genuinely operates in the context of multi-cultural interaction. Firstly, at least one - eight of those 100 people would own the rest of what everyone else calls theirs. Secondly, North America has a larger population than South America (just a side note that was strange to me), thirdly, How would 60 people speak thousands of other languages? I get that it’s an example on a smaller scale but even still I’m just confused. The main point I wanted to address was the fact that the 1% elite would still have to exist in this fictions realm, and poverty, substance abuse disorders, mental health disorders, systemic oppression etc. would still exist also. I thought I would just post my confusion in case anyone else feels similarly to my thoughts. Cheers.

Give them a cell phone, walk to where they can't see or hear you, and then call them. Then hang up and video call them. Then show them all the buildings we have today and have their minds blown. Skyscrapers, fancy churches, mosques, and temples, unique homes and offices. Are you really implying everything we have today would be less impressibe to an ancient Egyptian than the pyramids?That's not to mention cars, trains, and airplanes. Someone from Ancient Egypt or anywhere in the ancient world would likely go into shock due to sheer overstimulation at the advancedness of the modern world

There is problem in each system… Having lived in eastern culture for most of my life, I can see those flaws closely… There is always a pressure to conform to a certain role in the society which limits your potential and creativity… This also results in controlling behavior from the elders towards the younger.

You forgot to mention that the ten richest people own seven eights of the entire village, and out of these, the richest one person owns half the village. Also, their property is the only one that's consistently growing while everyone else's is shrinking. I don't think any of the other facts can even meaningfully be understood, let alone addressed, without keeping that essential fact in mind.

It's still better than being greedy and selfish
@Garvitb19
@Garvitb19 Жыл бұрын
@@Sauravme Disagree. Individualism does not necessarily mean being greedy and selfish. Going by this logic, can we not argue that collectivist societies are not greedy and selfish? In fact, it can be argued that many inefficient societies are collectivist and often plagued by corruption. Individualism may be a necessary condition for originality. Any society that expects its people to fit in at any cost is unlikely to invent or innovate. Let's consider a little thought experiment. Can you name five major inventions from collectivist nations in the last five years? Collectivist societies often rely on validation rather than hard metrics to feel accomplished, which can make them seek fame over anything else. Additionally, collectivist societies that abhor individualism often save their entire lives to splurge on a few social and emotional events. For example, people in India may save money their whole life to spend it all in one day on a wedding or education, but they may not be willing to pay for one-day faster Amazon delivery. Standing out in a collectivist society is not appreciated, and those who do stand out are often taunted until they become more similar to everyone else. This may explain why most societies that excel in terms of startups are individualistic nations. Additionally, it is worth noting that societies that have denied same-sex marriages and LGBTQ rights are often collectivist nations. Take a look around your house and count how many inventions come from individualistic nations versus collectivist nations. Collectivist nations tend to give rise to conformity, which you may have experienced yourself. This may be why concepts such as obtaining consent are more prevalent in Western culture than in Eastern cultures. and also, It is wrong to think of complex concepts in a binary lens of right or wrong.
