contrary to popular belief, people tend to not get mugged on trains, let alone killed. the reason why is simple: the perfect middle ground between crowded and desolate, CCTV footage sealing your fate if you're caught in the act, and trains tend to be the only public space you routinely enter that you can easily be locked inside while police are called. those who say otherwise are agoraphobes, the lot of them, and are thoroughly shitfaced on cable news as if that accurately reflects reality

I noticed there's now 2 different sets of horns on this train. They used the horns in ILLINOIS that sounds similar to the horns on AMTRAKS. Those are the horns I prefer.

It's like the planners decided to route this line through the emptiest areas possible and decided not to develop them. 🤔

in all fairness, St. Louis's entire metro area has land use this abysmal. shit like the promenade and the gonorrhea being right next to each other, generating a traffic maelstrom, while dogtown is completely devoid of all kinds of retail despite having perfect buildings for it, and then there's a target and a shmucks adjacent in northampton because fuck the concept of making sense. a lot of this was also built on existing railway corridors because the same nimby fuckers who get completely histrionic every night on the news about "THOSE DAMN RECKLESS DRIVERS" proceed to go apeshit when any sort of alternative is suggested

See it from the good side. If Belleville, Swansea or the Scott AFB need new housing, they can build it around the MetroLink stations and it wont increase traffic a lot.

I've heard Metro Link isn't that safe to ride nowadays.

As usual, the local news and misinformed rumors that people hear from their friends blow the danger way out of proportion. According to data from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police and the St. Louis County Police, you're twice as likely to die in a car accident than be a victim of violent crime on the MetroLink. And Chesterfield, a wealthy and supposedly safe suburb, has a violent crime rate nearly 8-times that of the MetroLink. In addition, if more routes and more trains are added to the MetroLink and you just generally make it more practical and convenient to use, that would invite more people to use it, you'd get more eyes on the train at any given time, and that would further deter the very minimal crime on the MetroLink there already is.

On 7th January 1997 I rode the Metrolink, from Lambert Terminal 1 to 5th and Missouri, and pretty much everything in this video is as I remember - especially the original rolling stock and live announcements by the driver. Sadly I have not had the opportunity to return to St. Louis, maybe I will in the future. Metrolink is only the second urban railway system that I remember riding, which spans at least two states. The previous system I rode, that fit that criteria, was the Washington DC Metrorail. I have also taken PATH from NYC World Trade Center to Hoboken/Jersey City NJ, that was almost five years ago. Going back to the airport, in time to catch a flight to London Gatwick, I rode in the same car, that President Clinton rode a few years prior, when he participated in the Metrolink's inaguration in 1993. I still have a photo of the plaque "This is the car that he rode in".
