Thank you so much for sharing your story! I‘m currently planing my trip with my bike around ring road this july. To be honest, I‘ve never been on my own for so long. How did you experience this? Is the lonelynes a sturdy companion or do you meet a lot of other people during your journey? Thank you so much for your insights, I will now enjoy the second part! :D

Oof I wish I could be specific! One thing to say would be this was 2016 and a lot's changed in the world since... I can say this much, accommodation was reasonable as I only stayed a few nights in air bnb's and one lodge show in this video. Other than that the campsites often didn't even have a way to pay and I just left some honesty money if and where I could! Not all were like that, but at least half - it may well be busier now with more facilities at some of these places. My main costs were in buying evening dinners at the service stations. My plan had been to cook for myself but the temptation of hot food that was already prepared was very often too hard to resist!! Iceland is expensive, there's no escaping that food and drink costs will be high, but that's not to say it can't be done on a budget with planning and willpower better than mine! Sorry this isn't likely very helpful! Are you planning a trip this year? Thanks for watching these videos :)

Good evening. Using Epson V850 Pro. I was wondering what would be the best settings to set for scanning negatives when using a wet/fluid mount? I tried using 48 bit (image type) and 4800 (resolution) but the scanning freezes. Meaning the blue light on the very top stays at the top and never moves. When I open the lid, the light to the lid doesn’t move either. When I changed the image type to 24 bit and resolution to 3200, then it doesn’t freeze and scans fine. Please help. Thanks.

Hey! I am planning to make the same journey with some friends in June/July and your videos have been a great source of information and inspiration. One question - assuming you brought your bike on the plane, where did you store the bike box during your journey? Or did you throw it out and pick up a new one before you left? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi! Thanks for watching and I'm glad these videos are still of value to others, 7.5 years on! I can hardly believe it was that long ago!! I'm excited for you for your trip, you'lll have an amazing time. To your question - I had the local Vancouver store where I bought my bike box it up for the trip out - many will do this for a small charge as they have lots of spare boxes. I threw the box out then had this store in Reykjavik box mine for the return trip. I contacted them in advance to arrange this but it was no problem and cost very little. kriahjol.is/ The alternative, if you're planning a lot of cycle touring, would be to get a dedicated cycle case which offers a bit more protection in transit, but as you say will require storing. I believe there's a facility very close to the airport that provides space to reassemble your bike, some tools, and a place to store bike boxes for a fee. I'd contact the airport as staff there might be able to point you in the right direction for more info! Hope this is helpful, let me know how you get on, would love to hear about your trip! Quite a lot of people have written to me since I posted these videos and it's always fun to learn about others' trips and adventures! Best wishes and safe cycling!

Great! Question: once you've finished, how do you clean the mounting fluid of your negative?
@JamesStevensonPhoto
@JamesStevensonPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hi! It almost immediately evaporates leaving no trace. I've checked my negatives even years later for rescanning and never once seen any damage caused. This - at least - is my own experience! I'd recommend testing on film that's not essential to preserve just for your own peace of mind. Thanks for watching!

Cheers! For what it's worth, last night i did my first fluid mount scan. When i compared it to just placing the negative (4x5) loose on the glass, the difference was so small, that it hardly seems worth the bother. Which is good and bad news. Bad news because i bought all the gear for fluid mount scanning. Good news because it's quite a hassle. Anyway, i'll try some more and see if i can improve on the glass mount scan.@@JamesStevensonPhoto

Looking at this trip next year in august with my son his friend and niece. All who are over 20 and experienced bicyclists. What reference online would you suggest for campsites. I am figuring every four days getting a room to clean up and shower and get good rest. Hindsite being what is what would change about your trip. I am hoping to do 50 mile a day average.

Nice tutorial! I've been scanning family history negatives from 1920 through the 1980s, and I'm always looking for new tips. I use the V850, but I've opted to use VueScan instead of the Epson software, but I do many of the same things you do. One thing I do differently is that I set the crop for the scan inside the frame rather than outside because if it's outside the frame, then the histogram picks up information outside the frame - probably not a huge deal. I also don't use the film holders that come with the scanner, partly because I have a lot of odd film sizes for which there aren't holders. I put the film into the poly archive preservers like you show at the beginning of the video (from PrintFile, I love them), then I put the entire sheet of negatives on the scanner, proper side up, but top and bottom of the sheet reversed so the printing at the top of sheet doesn't interfere with the scanner calibration each time it scans. I borrowed the glass from an 8 1/2 x 11 picture frame to put on top of the sheet of negatives to flatten them. Then I scan using 8 x 10 mode. I have to manually set the crop to one photo at a time, which is tedious. I don't get newton rings, maybe because the poly on either side of the negatives prevents them from contacting the glass. All the stuff about adjusting the histogram, 16 bits per channel, and linear curve is good, that's what I do. I do question moving the mid-tone indicator somewhere besides halfway between the bottom and top indicators. It seems to me that this is the equivalent of setting a non-linear curve, right?

Whatever you do digitally, do not destroy your negatives in any case! Digital formats will change, and there is a risk you can't open your files after 30 years or so. Film will still be fine, if correctly stored, and not nitrate,

What about after scanning - what happens to the negative, how do you clean it before archive?
@JamesStevensonPhoto
@JamesStevensonPhoto Жыл бұрын
No cleaning required! The fluid simply evaporates right of the film, you can see it happen. I leave mine for a few hours just to be sure it's dry, but you can pretty much return it to a storage sleeve in moments. I've never seen any ill-effect to my archived film.

Thanks for watching Beth! Since making these videos I've been in a pattern of fluid mounting only those photos that are really important to me. The gains are bigger from improving techniques with the software over the stock settings then they are at the upper end of fluid mounting etc, and my main method is VueScan with the epson mounts. I'm happy that others like yourself are still finding these videos a few years after I made them, and great to hear you're all set to start scanning! I hope this helps you get great results!

Hello my friend, how many weeks do you recommended for cycling Iceland, I’m thinking 3 weeks what do u recommend?
@JamesStevensonPhoto
@JamesStevensonPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching! Three weeks is a good amount of time, it will just come down to what you want to do. Cycling a full loop of the ring road, I'd allow three weeks at least and factor in a couple of days extra for contingency if you can. I lost a few days on bike repairs, and for my level of experience I'd have liked a few more days. If you plan to just visit different locations by bus then do some cycling there, three weeks is a good amount of time to explore different areas and cover a lot of miles! Hope that's helpful?

With WET SCANNING now possible with the NIKON COOLSCAN 8000ED and the 9000 ED I will have to try the products you are using. I will be using your techniques with 4 x 5 and the step by step preparation using the fine line of Epson Perfection flat bed machines Thank you for the education.

@@snowblow1984 Good call! I think that'll really help you decide what's essential to take and what you can leave. I for instance did not once use heavy hiking boots nor any of the pots / pans / cooking gear I took. There are N1 service stations all around the country and each one had a decent hot meal buffet dinner which, wilst pricier, beat cooking with not a lot of energy left. When I knew I wouldn't be near one I just stocked up a little on picnic style food for the evenings. I could also have cut down on some camera gear, I didn't use all of it in the end.
