For the coldest environments I recommend Kamik and Baffin. The Baffin impact or eiger are rated for -100c/-170f. Get 1 or even 2 sizes bigger. Make sure they’re not tight or you’ll get cold.

Hi Lucy, Thanks for this really useful video. I’m going to my first ever extreme cold expedition and need to buy most of the gear. Are there shops in the UK you would recommend where I can try it on. I’m a small petite woman and struggle with sizes in the normal conditions, so finding sizes for laying online quite challenging. I’d really appreciate practical advise from a ‘local’.
@LucyShepherd
@LucyShepherd Жыл бұрын
Hello! I would say Snow and Rock are pretty good and sometimes order extra things in. Nordic Outdoor has also just opened in London - it’s got lots of brands you wouldn’t normally find in the uk. Snow and rock are good at ordering sizes in so you could ask them to do that before going. They also match prices online.

So. An "easy to sweat" person like me, what should do?
@LucyShepherd
@LucyShepherd Жыл бұрын
I recommend netting base layers. If that doesn’t sound good, thinner merino wool and a breathable shell. As soon as you move you don’t need many layers (even more so if you tend to be v warm). Just be ready to put on the layers as soon as you stop.

I am a bit nervous about the breathability with the mesh. Have you tried putting your dog inside with the top zipped closed to see if your dog can breathe well? I want to use it to bring my dog places where they don't allow dogs, so I will need to close the top and hide my dog inside. In warm summer weather will your dog be ok breathing with it zipped closed inside of it?
@LucyShepherd
@LucyShepherd Жыл бұрын
I leave the zip open a little for extra air to get in. The mesh is definitely ok but it seems nicer to leave a bit more light too. There are two places you can leave a gap in the zip both on the side and top. (I have sneaked her into supermarkets a few times and if I want to comfort her, I put the bag on my front and have my hand in the bag on her!)

Thanks Lucy , I think I many have heard you talking about your expeditions on Between the mountains podcast . I have appeared once on the podcast but not as brave as your adventures. My last trek in the Himalayas was the Manaslu circuit , I headed out ahead of the group early morning on the highest point and saw a Snow Leopard 🐆. A rare sighting on the Tibet Nepal boarder . I suffered with heat exhaustion for the first time on that trek . I have given up my rubbish job on the railway at the right time now that they are going on strike at the ago of 50 being mortgage free and all the night shift working , and moving to Scotland nearer to the mountains that I love . I hope to return to the Himalayas in the next few years. You are one of the great people that inspire me to keep going on adventures. All the best to you with your future adventures / Endeavours.
