This was about the pinnacle of Haitink's time with the orchestra, so Abbado was handed a well oiled machine. I think the climax to the big brass choral near the end of the finale, is done about as well here as I've ever heard it done.

A superb performance. A lush yet radiant sound as well as transparent. I have heard this symphony 20 times by various orchestras and I still heard horn,clarinet and flute parts for the first time in this recording. Excellent pacing by the conductor !

Maybe I'm projecting, as I know Abbado was very ill from his cancer, and died a few months later, but I hear in this darkly played opening, right through the first crescendo, a chilling premonition, then an almost helpless feeling in the repeated descents in the violins. As I listen at the beginning, anyway, I think this sounds to be a very special 9th.

Thank you thank you! I attended his last two concerts in Lucerne and have always regretted DG only published the Bruckner. Because the Schubert was extraordinary and heartbreaking. I will treasure your post, thank you.

Totally agree. The same applies to the Beethoven 3rd which was amazing but which, at least was recorded on DVD

The ending is very difficult for the 2 timpanist to play exactly together

Not that hard. The second timpanist watches the first timpanist, and not the conductor.

Yes, beautiful with a loud, rude outrageous, disgraceful ad for dog food blasting in right in the middle of a movement. KZbin should be ashamed of itself. Can't they put the annoying ads in between the movements? But that would require a little common sense. They're so greedy, the ads are coming every two minutes !!

As much as I love edita but Arleen Auger sings the Lucia Silla aria much better. A more refined coloratura soprano in Mozart.
