Values change over time, so if you traded a torpedo for a brulee on day 1, values were still in the making, so people just traded whatever they want.

The biggest mistake I made was Trading Celsior for Airtail.. Back then Airtails were decent but now they are so bad. (Btw Duped raptors dont exist for the void rim trade)
