Just to be a little pedantic here ... The USA does not now, nor has it ever, used the imperial system of measurement. We did not inherit the imperial system when we gained independence as the imperial system did not exist until later. We inherited English units of measure. In 1826 the British Empire adopted the imperial system of measurement. In 1832 we did a little fiddling with English units and adopted the results as US customary units.

Here it is: What is the weight of the water that fall on a yard during the rain. a) The yard is 1 ha and the rainfall was 1 cm b) The yard is 1 acre, and the rainfall was 1 inch The answer to question a) can be easily calculated in memory by a smart fourth grader The answer to question b) would take a scientist few minutes and they would definitely need a calculator Sure, it costs money to make the change, but everybody else has done that at some point. UK as recently as in the 70s, I believe. Same with Canada. They use kilograms, liters and kilometers, no problem. Even though they have the same or even stronger cultural ties to the old British system than Americans. Afterall Americans rebelled against the British Empire. Canadians never did.
