Paul Simon loved to go into his tiled bathroom, turn off the light, turn on the sink faucet because the sound of water pleased him, then he would play music. The sound in the tiled bathroom was amazing. His starting lyrics "hello darkness, My old friend" was in regards to this.

Thank you for the explanation! Then, in this song, is "I would die in ecstasy" a completely never-happening story, and "Driving down the road alone" is expected to happen?
@explainedinenglish
@explainedinenglish 7 ай бұрын
That's right, 'I would die in ecstacy' is hypothetical and didn't necessarily happen in real life. That's why the conditional 'I would die' is used. 'Would', 'could', 'might', etc. are all used to show potential happenings. 'Driving down the road alone' could be actually happening, but more likely it's connected to the future phrase in the previous line, 'but I'll be a bag of bones...', which means that's how she will feel when she is driving down the road alone (sometime in the future). Good questions! I hope my answers help rather than confuse you more!

A week or 2 ago I was grabbed/touched by a song. Today I heard it again and I started investigating who it was, I am Dutch myself and can understand and read a little English. So I started watching and listening to the song with lyrics. it touched me in one way or another, even though I couldn't really make anything out it except for a few lines.you probably know that feeling. That is why my curiosity was aroused to see if there was someone who had worked out the text with comprehension. and yes this is you.🥳 and for this I wanted to thank you🙏 it makes me even clearer now why this song/tekst grabbed me. And especially after my dream last night which was intense and clear in a way at that moment but today has quietly faded during the day, unfortunately. This is beautifully described by you. I have noticed that for a few months now my spiritual side has wanted to show itself and develop and that last night's dream, the remix of this song and your translation of the song that all came to me today is a good example of this and awareness and it answers me. gives me what I just needed. So thank you again for your time and effort in doing this. 💯🙏 Ps: the tekst is from Simon & Gorfunkel. But the song i refer to is a remix. Its Sound of Silence by Cyril . I think you like it to. ❤

Thanks for sharing your story. This is a song that touches a lot of people in a sort of mysterious and deep way. There are feelings and emotions infused within it, and no matter the artist that covers it, the root is there and felt. I'm particularly glad that the explanation helped you understand what you sensed. I think there is a lot to the lyrics, surely even themes and references I missed when first considering the interpretation. One of these days I'll have to get back to creating. It's always beautiful to read an experience like yours and know that the work somehow finds who needs it, with time. Thanks again for writing. I wish you the best on your life journey and spiritual path. 🙏

Ah, is that so? I'm mostly explaining the lyrics for people learning English. At the end I usually put my own interpretation of the lyrics, which can be different from what other people say and even the artist themselves! Art is beautiful because it means something different to everyone. It's definitely OK for you to have your interpretation too. I hope you have a great day as well.

I came across this video while looking for a lyrical analysis of No Surprises. I’m not even an English learner, but something about this video was so captivating and therapeutic that I listened to the whole thing. It’s a little melancholic too (in a way that I love): picking apart the meanings of these sad lyrics line by line… You seem like a great teacher and a very friendly person, and you did an excellent job with this. Not only did you explain the meanings of words and idioms with slow, clear pronunciation, but you even touched on various aspects of American/European culture that would help someone fit into an English-speaking setting. I imagine this would be super useful for someone learning English (I’m always looking for quality resources like these to learn Spanish). And I really learned a lot about the song itself as well! You have some great insights. I hope you have a wonderful day!

Nice job on this. “Time to kill” is also a double entendre both at the beginning of this song and the end of the song. It refers both to the fact that he has some extra time on his hands and also to the literal fact that in this time someone will be killed.
