With three networks to watch on TV, with plenty of variety and talk shows, Mac Davis was part of America .

I was at Coldwater every time they played and at every major concert where they opened. I remember when Mel Tillis' Band came to Coldwater after their concert and played with the Maines Brothers. That was a fun night. I also remember that Ronnie Milsap was extremely complimentary to them. I believe he said they were the best 5 man band he'd ever heard.

I met Mac Davis in a bad situation. A lady in front of him slammed on her brakes because she missed her turn. He bumped her and I bumped him. When he got out of the car and I recognized him, I tried to lighten the situation by saying, “Of all the people in Los Angeles I could’ve crashed into, it had to be one of my heroes.” (It was true. I grew up with his music, as most of us did.) He was a gentleman throughout the ordeal and always called me buddy. He even told me a story about when he bought his first car with the money he earned from writing “In the Ghetto” for Elvis. He called it his “Elvis car”. He said he was driving down the street one day “looking at a girl’s rear end walking along the sidewalk instead of the rear end of the car in front of me” (as he put it) and didn’t see it had stopped until it was too late. He caused a lot of damage to that car, and he had only had it for a month or two. He probably told me that to make me feel better about running into him. As the old saying goes, the best way to know someone’s true character is to see how they behave in a bad situation, and how they treat someone who can’t do anything for them. By both measures, Mac was an absolute prince. I cried when he died like he was a good friend. The best artists make you feel that way. Rest in peace, buddy.

I tool lessons from David in the 80s. Super guy, really patient and inspiring. He gave me a tape of Christopher Parkening Plays Bach for my HS Graduation. I wore the cassette out.

Wish they would air some of the old Mac Davis shows. I was very young and can barely remember. But he would make up songs from someone in the audience on the spot.

My best friend, Todd Henry, was John Sprott's roommate at Texas Tech. I was doing "spring break" in South Padre when the Nelsons played the club that I was doing sound. Donnie tried to steal the girl that I was chatting up at the bar. John, of course, was a gentleman the entire time.

A piece of The Nelsons' "Basement Tapes" semi-finals-winning episode is on KZbin now ( watch?v=TbVJYU13pRQ ). Not their segment, or the results, or anything -- and not good quality, either -- but it's something.
