I know this is an old post. What downloads did you use or purchase ? I did get the road sd card but I can't just push where to when I get off the trail to find fuel unless I go in to change it to city. I just got this thing trying to learn all I can. This is VERY helpful. I can't figure out how to download a GPX off of a web to my computer to load into the Garmin. Still learning. Thanks
@andrewpowell52294 жыл бұрын
The type of map loaded determines if you can search on things like fuel stations. City Navigator provides all this info so you can search on fuel stations. A topographic map may not have that info embedded in the map so it probably won't search. I always switch to City Navigator if wanting to set "Where to" to a fuel servo.

POOR PRODUCT The 610 i purchased failed within 12 months. It was raplaced under warranty with a refurbished 2nd hand unit. Now 30 months later the off/on button has collapsed into the unit, perished/rotted materials being the cause. Garmin offer units in exchange with large cash payments from myself, but no answer as to why this 2nd hand unit, with unknown history, has an outer case deteriorating? Very dissapointing that this products outer case is sub standard. Poor customer service

I love Basecamp.. but I am starting to hate my Garmin Montana 610. Why is it that I can create folders and lists in Basecamp, but cannot do the same thing on the actual Garmin device? It makes no sense! Trying to find things on the device is such a stupid pain! The GPS device is so cluttered and out of order without lists or a way to categorize certain trips. Each trip has tracks and waypoints, but there is no way to put those into a list on the handheld - Dumbest thing ever. I hope someone will tell me I'm doing something wrong, but as far as I've been able to tell, there is no way to organize items on the actual device, it's just a free for all full of junk. I wanted so bad to like this thing as it was a gift, but I really only keep it as a backup unit in case something happens to my phone, which is my primary navigation device and it does such a better job. Such a disappointment for an expensive device.. to lack what is such a basic function on my phone is just crazy to me.. It's like comparing a PS4 to an old Atari.
@andrewpowell52295 жыл бұрын
Agree to an extent that storage options on the device are limited but I tend to use Basecamp as my database and just load particular tracks onto the Montana prior to a ride. You can prefix tracks with A,B,C etc to order them or use some other naming convention to order them but as you say "mass storage" is limited.
@privateperson10095 жыл бұрын
Can you also 'prefix' tracks with: 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 (?)

Can I ask you something? When you have the unit outdoor, and you don't walk, just stand and turn left or right, does the blue triangle points the right direction? I had eTrex touch 35 before and the unit struggle with this, now I have edge 1030 and only when I start walking blue triangle change position which is entirely useless on the track.
@andrewpowell52295 жыл бұрын
No unfortunately not, the blue triangle does not know which way it is pointing when stationary, with "track up" selected the map will rotate , if "North up" is selected the map stays still and the blue triangle rotates.

@@andrewpowell5229 Thank you Andrew for a quick reply. That's a shame, to be honest. I wonder why Garmin struggle to add this function into dedicated outdoor devices. I have Fenix 5X plus GPS watch, and it works perfectly fine. All the best

I was going to do a video series Andy, I meet so many people who struggle with Basecamp but you have it covered perfectly. As Andrew suggests I also find it a lot easier to plot missing sections as a route initially its heaps quicker and neater then convert it to a track (then delete the route file) and join the track sections as in your vid. I converted that same BDR for Crazy A also via just running the route tool over that whole course only took about 5 minutes then just converted it to a track as an example. About the only other thing I do that some may find helpful that I haven't seen in your vids? is If I am working on some new rides and I want to check out how trafficable a section may be, I export that track as a KML and then open it in google earth. (you used to be able to view in google earth straight from Basecamp but google shafted that!) Inversly I use the path tool in Google earth and plot random forestry tracks, then export that back to basecamp. I have found some mint tracks in the middle of the boonies that way, I will add I have also gotten into some random places where people didn't want me also! I also use OpenStreetMaps(free) I know I'm always banging on about them. If I find a good track not on the map, I take the track file and upload it to the Mapset, its updated every month I think? Maybe I will just do a Google Earth vid to show how I use that for checking tracks, Its about the only thing I can think of that would add to your vids, good job. Do you use quicktime as your screen recorder? p.s I was at the adventure Moto gig a while back, It was a privilege to hear James Inspirational story. Cheers

I use an app called Droidcam which turns my phone into a webcam and allowed me to add narration. I don't plan to add to what I have done as I have now moved into Tablets, looking at using the 7 in Tablet to enhance my Montana set up by providing map overviews of the area around the track I am following. Just working through making a robust set up before I do a series on tablets.

Hi mate me again. If you weren't hunting for track and would be following one; would you select "record and do not show on map" when turning on the recording of tracks . Also if you do not reset the trip computer (say you forget) the information of the trak you rode would be stored because of the fact that you recorded it, right? Thanks again mate.
@andrewpowell52296 жыл бұрын
I always select record and show on map with the line colour set to light blue , so If I am following a track which is set as a pink line it is very obvious when you start going OFF track as the light blue and pink lines separate. It is very easy then to return to the pink line by following your light blue track back until you rejoin the pink. The trip computer works independently of the track record feature, so resetting the trip computer has no effect on the recorded track. Hope that helps, Andy

Trip computer keeps counting KMs /Miles no matter what you do, unless you reset. The recording of your current track also continues unless you swap profiles if the profile has different preset maps selected.

Have you ever experienced the GPS deviating from your custom made track due to "faster or more direct ways" to a final destination. I have heard some units like tomtom will alter a custom route if the unit can not find a road on it's pre-loaded map
@andrewpowell52296 жыл бұрын
No because the Montana is designed as a unit for hikers it is not as orientated to car navigation. When you request it to navigate via a track it just illuminates the track as a thick pink line and does not try and redirect you via roads.
@dirtbike250xx6 жыл бұрын

Hi man I'm considering two units ATM. Hema Hx1 and Garmin 610. The Hema has alot of bad reviews but a nice high resolution screen etc. The Garmin seems a little laggy compared to modern smart phones. Do you think a new model to replace the Garmin 610 is coming soon?
@andrewpowell52296 жыл бұрын
I have actually started using a 7 in Lenovo tablet alongside my Montana, I use the Montana for following a preloaded track zoomed in to 200metres set to track up and I use the Tablet with Hema Explorer Pro App like a moving map , I have the track loaded in that too but it shows me my position on the track with a greater level of map detail showing me the surrounding area so if I see something interesting close by to my track I can go and investigate. Hema Map is set to North up and at about 2km zoom. Works great. Tablet was cheap so I haven't bothered with mounting in a box or anything just velcroed to a bracket on my dash. I think Tablets maybe the future. Much cheaper and for adventure riding it is way better seeing all the detail on a full map on a 7 in screen.
@jasoncee6666 жыл бұрын
Andrew Powell thanks for all the info and help. Im new to offroad exploring on my motorcycle and found so so many tracks it's definitely unsafe to explore without assistance 😨 Say if I got the Hema Pro App installed on my tablet, is this able to show my current position on the trail if there is no internet available for the tablet. I may need the gps system since there is no mobile service or internet available....Way too deep in the forest lol🙇
@andrewpowell52296 жыл бұрын
The Lenovo 7 in Tab has full GPS and what they call assisted GPS, assisted uses mobile towers to give a quicker signal but the tablet defaults to standard GPS when no mobile towers are local. Standard GPS is as good as a Garmin device. Hema works by downloading maps to the tablets memory so everything works out in the bush just with a GPS signal. It all depends on your Tablet having a built in GPS antenna, many do.
@jasoncee6666 жыл бұрын
Andrew Powell Thanks again Andrew. It seems I must do alot more research before making a decision. Yes the tablet system you have come up with is excellent and I agree seems the way of the future. Have a great day my friend 🙋
