Oh yes, I used to get sent to Pimmies in College Street sometimes by my mum, nan & grandad, for a few pies for us all, and a little chocolate box cake for me (used to love them). Mum would cut the meat and potato pies in to 4 pieces for me and put HP sauce in the middle of the plate for dipping xD

growing up in St Helens in the 70s and 80s i loved that town, so much going for it yet for some reason towards the late 80s it seemed to get bogged down and got held there and never seemed to move forward like the other towns nearby. I moved away in 91 and have only been back maybe 6 times. This film though made me proud to be from St Helens. I don't think i will ever go back there but i have fantastic memories of Carr mill dam, the hotties, St Helens show, and Silcox fairground that just turned up everywhere. They were brilliant days.

My grandparents worked for Pilks for many years. Both are gone now. The last time I went to St Helens I cried because the town was like a ghost town.

I do miss Pimbletts. Sadly missed It was a lovely bakery. Every weekend it would be a nice treat after shopping. Either a meat potato pie or a cheese and onion pasty; piping hot they would be straight out of the oven. Those where the days. I don't see why it had to go!!

Moving the population underground was the best decision the council ever made. They should not have allowed them the right to forage on the surface at night, though.

My mother would bring me here for my school uniform back in the 90's. It would be a family day out. Even my nan would accompany us on the shopping trip. Then tea afterwards in the top tea room. Such a shame Tyrers is no longer with us. St Helens has gone on a huge downwards spiral all the quality shops have shut down and gone away and replaced with pound stores!. St Helens is a mere shadow of it's former self, sadly.

2:25 The Gentleman says "Councils are looking for spaces for markets to bring people in" Presumably this was recorded something like 1990 approx. 34 years later, the council have listened to that Gent and now have a redevelopment plan which has a brand new market at the very centre of the town. If they had listened to him at the time, they could have saved £90m of today's money.

Let us hope so. As long as they give shoppers somewhere to park, cheap, or better still free, it will have a good chance.

@@sthelenshistorychannel Fingers crossed, although they have knocked one carpark down, plan to build on Birchley St (long term) and plan to flatten both the Hardshaw Centre and Tontine, so precisely where parking will be is hard to guess. They have said they are still looking into parking at the moment. They seem to truly believe that a new bus station will cause the folk of St Helens to leave their cars at home and use public transport/cycle. Not in a million years in my opinion.

This film epitomises what a great Country we used to be, what has happened to our once proud nation with its towns and cities ? I think we should have kept it the way it was,There is no control today, we are just a dumping ground for economic migrants. Our weak politicians have screwed us, good and proper.

I was a small boy when it was a museum, and one of the rooms I went in had a stuffed tiger in a glass case, and it didnt half make you jump when you walked in and saw it for the first time. Always wondered what happened to it when the museum closed down. Now theres a mystery.

As as a 16yr old (1992) we got pulled in by the "careers advisor". It was either stay in college, or take on a YTS scheme... No mines, no Pilks, no Beechams, no jobs and no hope! Luckily, my parents were incredibly supportive and I managed to get to University. There were kids who were miles brighter than me, but didn't have that support. Growing up in the 80s/90s was very worrying time in St Helens... you could see the town going under in front of your eyes... a proud town, kept alive by a brilliant Rugby League team. 🏉
