Been using Debian for almost 30 years, because they are all the same after you learn to use Linux to any extent (you'll make it "your own" anyway). Distros are just like cool breakfast cereal boxes. The real prize is inside. I have been thinking of "hopping" recently, but it is to have a fling with a new package manger for a specific benefit.

In Debian 12, my i3 has a memory leak, X11 sometimes crashes, sxhkd sometimes doesn't wanna respond and some random errors in Alacrittyy. Nothing that prevents me from getting the job done, but can't say that Debian is "stable"".

Pretty common problems of a rooky user (I don't want to offend you). distro hopping doesn't solve problems, it just moves your learning curve further and further forward. Get a well documented distro like opensuse (or debian, fedora even arch), start mastering desktop environment, filesystem, package management, terminal!!!!! virtualization (in which is the place to do your experience of distro hopping), latest and greatest is not always a good choice. I suggested you opensuse because you can start with a reliable linux system, you got snapper ready to solve problems in case of a disaster, tons of good docs. be persevering and you will be amazed by results! I wish all the best dude!

Debian = Old, Still on plasma 5 Fedora = Evil, Has corpo rot Ubuntu = Evil, Has corpo rot and clings to proprietary snaps Arch = Unstable, AUR is buggy and unsafe NixOS = Obscure, Has terrible with load times on KDE I've tried all linux distros closest I've got to a decent setup is kubuntu minimal install because snap is not installed by default and its plasma 6.

Just my 2ct: First decide for a desktop environment. Because this is, what you see every day. Second, if you are a new user go with the popular ones. Avoid Arch-based systems. They are for enthusiast. Just too bleeding. Fedora is very good for up-to-date systems. Maybe still too bleeding, but I had not any issues. I think the Ubuntu family is still the best. You can choose recent versions or LTS. There is so much political fuzz around snaps, which I do not understand. You can use flatpaks instead. You can get rid of snap firefox ... or snap at all. There are tutorials for how to do it. Also, I think it is the most used distro in business. LinuxMint is very good, if you can go with the Cinnamon desktop. Debian is a hard one. Very stable and very out-dated. It is not as bad as it used to be, because you can use flatpaks. Also, don't get irritated by any distro hypes. Look for distros with very good documentation on the internet. Very good in the sense that you can understand. E.g. Arch has a very good Wiki, but as a new user you will not understand much. It is for advanced users. And also don't get fooled by statements like this is faster, .... Who cares? So, to sum up: 1. Look for a desktop environment - your daily user interface 2. Stick to popular distros, with a rather long history 3. The support you can get from the internet should be on your level 4. Do you want updates every day? 5. Do you mind older software and get new ones only for those you really want (using flatpak)? 6. If a distro is used in the business, that is usually a good sign. But be careful. In business linux is only used on a server not at the desktop (with exceptions).

I like Endeavour OS, it's the only Arch based distro that hasn't broken on me yet, but I do have it setup in a way where it takes a Timeshift snapshot every time I install or update something, just to be safe (takes a bit of tinkering, Arch wiki helps with that btw). However, I do dual boot with Windows 11, because there are some weird Windows things that I do for my YT channel, which I simply can't do with Linux. I use systemd-boot for boot management and KDE Plasma 6 as the desktop environment.

if you appreciate stability, try MX-Linux (a Debian based distro) perfect for first timer in Linux...GUI settings, no need to touch the terminal if you don't want to. But it has the capability to be a distro for poweruser too! Strong hardware support (use the AHS version - advanced hardware support), reliable non-breaking updates. I've installed MX-Linux XFCE to a laptop and a convertible (touch screen for digital drawing), working without issue so far...smooth sailing!

I did a distro hopping in the last three months and I can say that as far as I tried Linux Mint, Pop_OS, Kubuntu, Elementary OS,Zorin OS and Fedora are great for beginners. Mention special to Open suse. But Open suse and Fedora are different from the others that use Debian and Ubuntu as base. I know MX Linux is good too but not anyone will like it.

Many commenters don't seem to understand your claims. Here is my advice: Install the server (minimal) version of Ubutnu, without unnecessary garbage, and then install and customize what you need (sddm with plasma, gnome-software with flatpak and so on). This is more complicated than any classic graphical installation, but easier and faster than Arch, Void and NixOS. Also, Ubuntu has less problems with proprietary software compared to Fedora. Some people also recommended EndeavorOS, but this distribution is for those who understand how Arch works. I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner. But I would recommend vanilla Arch to a beginner, it's not as complicated as it seems at first glance, but it still takes time to install, customize and understand. In a nutshell: - Server (minimal) Ubuntu if you want something stable and flexible, with good support, but it still takes time to set up, though less than Arch. - Vanilla Arch, if you're willing to spend time customizing from scratch and want full control over the system. I've been distro-hopping for quite a while too, about half a year. I realized that Arch is the best of what I've tried.

Arch isnt as bad as many say (but totally shouldnt be your very first distro either). For the installation you can use archinstall so it isnt that bad (would still install manually using arch wiki to get more familiar with the command line). You get the newest software which could fix some of your problems related to video recording for example (obs is really good for general recording and gpu-screen-recorder-gtk is great for replays). This could also fix issues with some games or apps not working as intended due to driver issues. Since you get the newest stable kernel and drivers you get the newest features that could drastically improve your experience. You can also decide what apps to have and what apps not to have. You can decide what desktop environment to install and so on. The AUR is a blessing. Nearly everything you need that isnt in the official repos you can get it there. You just need an AUR helper like yay. Also make sure you update your regular and aur packages at the same time or it could lead to strange "something.so.1 not found" errors. If you still get these errors after updating a reboot will usually fix these issues. I also recommend to use the terminal for installing regular and aur packages. Its simply "sudo pacman -S app-name" for installing stuff and "sudo pacman -Syu" for system update" if you get a sth not found error or 404 make sure to sync the repos by doing "sudo pacman -Sy". For getting the app name just google "app-name arch" and you will get your answer really quickly. I don't see the need for snap or flatpaks. I have used arch linux for 1.5 years without any real issues. I have been using my computer for half a year like a casual user would. After everything is installed and configure there is little you have to do. If not arch, linux mint and fedora are solid choices. Debian is more meant for servers, thats why the packages are older to ensure stability. Ubuntu has gotten worse over time and I dont recommend it anymore. PS: If you constantly distrohop, take a bit of time to set up a separate home and system partition. When switching distros you then only have to replace the system partition and you dont have to worry copying files / documents to a separate USB drive. (but make sure to install the distros properly or your files are gone)

I would suggest trying Pop!_OS, or if you want less of a OOTB distro trying actually Debian Sid instead of Testing. It's objectively better than Testing, and even tho it's called unstable it's still rather solid. You might also want to try going back to Fedora. After you initially set up the proprietary repositories it will be better.

Can't believe no one's mentioned Manjaro! I've gotten to the point in my Linux journey where I don't want to mess with stuff all the time, and it's been great for that. Hardware support out of the box is next level, pacman and the AUR are super awesome, rolling release means you never have to worry about reinstalling, and even the theming is really nice. It's not a beginner distro and it has its quirks, though. You have to get under the hood to fix updates once in a while. But with some tinkering it's been very reliable for me. I've been dailying it since 2016(?) and I've never looked back. If I had to pick a different distro I'd probably be a Mint user though. Cinnamon is awesome and it's the main desktop I use. It's a great place to start, and if you're bored of the look there's lots of great themes for it.

@@_h1x to be honest, i used Arch linux for 6 months and i have to say Void linux is harder than arch, on void the installation is easy but after that setting the distro up is very difficult rather than arch, where the installation is hard but setting it up isn't. On void you have to manually configure NetworkManager or iwd or whatever youre using just so the internet doesnt tweak every 20 or so minutes, the repositories are very small so youre entirely dependent on non-frees and FlatPak, which is bloat, setting up a Desktop Environment (for example Xfce4 my favorite) is VERY hard, you Manually configure every package (set them up using Nano and writing a bit of bash code) and Etc. and as a person that had both arch and void, void is still better than Arch since it made me stop distro-hop because its so unique. also it uses runit rather than systemd and you can also have a musl type than glib (its lighter but works slower). Thats all i can say about Void rather than the fact that its also customizable

Its easy to setup and install, sadly plasma KDE loads very slow in terms of opening dolphin and loading things in comparison to even kubuntu, debian or arch. Something with the nix store messes with KDE. Also the political purge stuff. So sad because NixOS is what linux should've been. It should be declarative, easy to manage and easy to configure. Sadly KDE is the best desktop environment on linux and it just doesnt work well on NixOS because there's no support for it made by the KDE devs. Very sad.
