Why no brakes? Shouldnt there be some sort of parking break when occupant weight is removed from seat. Idling the machine in neutral instead of a "Park" seems dangerous.

One question here ... I am sitting with a LHD mining machine on site with the same drive system, I have an idea where I might add a speed sensor to the machine, the machine is an underground machine. Where and how will you guys add an aftermarket speed sensor. Keep in mind up and down hill.

What speed are you interested in monitoring? Speed of entire machine, Engine speed, Hydraulic flow rate, Etc.

From an engineering point of view, the hydrostatic drive is superb. Far fewer parts, so much cheaper to make, and very little metal to metal moving parts, so very little to wear out. Most of the movement is just the oil, which is easily replaced. The downside? Like automatic gearboxes that have a torque converter, the oil movement absorbs energy, but this more than offset by the lack of friction from gears and clutches. Also the range of speed is limited, so for high speed road use, you'd probably need a couple of gears at least. .

When applied in a CVT setting with multiple input ratios alot of different speeds can be achieved. The Japanese use this system in their type 10 main battle tank built by mitsubishi. I would agree on all points other than 'cheaper'. Hydraulic pumps and motors are very expensive due to the high tolerance required when machining the parts.

Nazi Germany was developing a hydrostatic drive panzer IV in the 1940s. This medium tank did not see production but would have had max speed of 40-50 km/h. That's a high speed application.

Around 1960, I had a small Piatti scooter that I think had a swashplate drive gearbox. The ''gears'' were operated by a twistgrip, with cables. The cables were inclined to stretch and cause gear change problems. A replacement set of cables would have cost me about half what I paid for the scooter. So I sold it. My neighbours sit-on lawn mower has the same type of rear axle drive system.
