have you actually got advanced equipment to pick up these signals, or is it just pretend to make the music more interesting.

Good question! I use short wave radios to captured signals and also use what's called Very Low Frequency (VLF) radio receivers, which can capture some very interesting sounds in the atmosphere if there's any kind of electrical activity (thunderstorms, for example). I also have a wide-band radio receiver which basically captures any kind of electromagnetic signal in the immmediate vicinity. So, yes, what you hear in relation to electromagnetic radio nosie is very real!
