This is an incredible game. Not without its flaws. It seems the most impressive stages, set pieces, and songs are front loaded to the first half. It’s not a huge dip in quality, but noticeable. All in all one of the most impressive shmups of the generation. And as usual, retro-bit did an incredible job with the repro. Nice review.

Half of these were on my favorites list when I was a heavy Atari 8-bit user. I loved the look of Dropzone, but I found it super frustrating to play. I'd get blown up so fast. I was a bit dazzled by the gameplay for it displayed here. The guy actually lasted more than a few seconds, lol. Some others I'd suggest are International Karate, Rescue on Fractalus, Encounter, and Stealth/Landscape.
@BeyondTheScanlines
@BeyondTheScanlines 20 күн бұрын
Encounter's a good choice, but wasn't part of this because it was included in a certain mini console, which is why the goal was to showcase games which didn't rely on the keyboard. Something that rules Fractalus out, which like OG Star Raiders is an essential on the A8s. But when you don't have access to a keyboard, it kind of makes them unplayable. Also, please don't dehumanise me by saying "the guy". Just because I don't show my face on camera, or on the thumbnail (looking like a fool), I'm as much a person as anyway, and by leaving a comment, it shows you want to have a conversation with the guy behind all this stuff. So calling me "the guy" doesn't particularly make me feel great.

@@BeyondTheScanlines - What I was referring to with "the guy" was the suited character in the game, not you, who I now know was the person playing it. I encourage you to take it as a compliment of your skills. I was just commenting on what I saw on screen, nothing else. :)

Thanks for covering the older demos. Some looked more impressive than what I see in Final Assault, in terms of graphics quality, but they were never turned into actual games. I've wondered why that was. Maybe the rendering took up all the CPU time, and adding game logic would've severely bogged it down.
@BeyondTheScanlines
@BeyondTheScanlines 21 күн бұрын
The way I see it: making games is hard. Especially when it's a hobby/passion project you're doing on the side of other things. So it's one thing to get a demo running at a decent speed, but to add everything else to make it a game? It's probably enough to slowly knock down the speed or rendering quality. Especially on an 8-bit machine, the trade-offs are always going to be present there.

This was a great analysis of Ace Combat 4, I'd say this and 0 are tied for my favorite games in the series for their more presonal, character focused stories and freedom and mission design. 4's story of the narrator as he finds a home with the enemy Yellow Squad and his internal conflict being pals with the enemy while his own neighbors are actively working in the resistance against Erusia, where through the narrator we see something more than 2 countries fighting, we see the people within those countries and why they fight, what they're fighting for. Even after multiple playthroughs I still find myself captured by 4's story and watch the cutscenes on every playthrough because they're that good. On 4's mission design, I'd say it strikes a nice balance of straightforward objective based missions with enough gimmicks to keep things fresh. The scenario design is pretty well considered and there aren't any missions that I'd consider "playthrough stoppers" because they're just so boring or annoying. The score attack missions where you have to hit a point threshold to complete the mission allowing for more player expression as its in your hands to pick what plane, weapons, and strategy you'll use to succeed, the letter grades ranking your performance taunting you to try again to get an S rank, and the points economy system to unlock planes all add to AC4's arcadey feeling but in a way that benefits it and adds plenty of replayability in a linear game. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the other AC games since you mentioned you started with the newer games in the series then went back to the older games to try them out, maybe that's a topic for a future video?

Absolutely. The multi-layered narrative really adds to the enjoyment - seeing actual simulators tend to ditch the story, and peers to AC tend to go more into the "serious" mindset with theirs, it makes AC stand out so much more.

@BeyondTheScanlines
@BeyondTheScanlines Ай бұрын
If you're loading TAP files, they load in real-time. So if it's using the original ROM routines, then you'll be in for a wait, otherwise whatever turbo routines are used. So you can see the full sequence including pictures being drawn, music being played, etc. For disks, again, they're using the native routines, but there is KERNAL replacement support so you can buy JiffyDOS ROMs and use that (of course sacrificing tape support), or use any carts with fastloaders built in.

I do not believe there is any procedural generation. Every items, trap, monster, treasure, item, and map is constructed. If there was any random then it was when maps were first created. I've played these maps over and over and over and EVERYTHING is in the same spots. Thus you can tactically figure your level 8 progress. Get your stats up to 99 each and mobs are nothing even with a dagger.

I guess it's a real showing of how far ahead the C64 was against most other micros of the time that being treated as a slightly higher-res VIC 20 is about on par with machines which launched later. Knowing the stories of some of the other Atarisoft adaptations to the machine (i.e. Joust), I'm not surprised they''d cheapen out, but still, I can't help but feel a little disappointed when so many other games of the time made proper use of the hardware.

Great to hear of another game rescued and made available for us to play. Though I'm rubbish at Defender - just too busy for me. My strategy was to fly across the screen constantly firing which worked for about 10 seconds before I'd collide with something. As a result I don't think I ever played Stargate and was interested in hearing the differences. This version does look like something from the VIC20. Thanks for the video.
@BeyondTheScanlines
@BeyondTheScanlines 2 ай бұрын
I imagine it works well enough (control wise) on a cab, but having never seen a Defender (or Stargate) in the wild, it's hard to say. So I've always appreciated home ports which rework the controls. I think the challenge with learning it is that most hints and tips tend to focus on the cab, and not on home versions. But even considering how arcade games are designed around trying to kill the player quickly, Defender & Stargate do push that a bit harder.
@merman1974
@merman1974 2 ай бұрын
I was pleasantly surprised to see this one finally recovered. I only have a little experience with the original Defender and Stargate arcade machines and find them too complex to emulate on keys. I like the compromise of moving left and right in this version, as it takes a mental step away from doing something during the action. It doesn't quite hold up to the brilliance of Eugene Jarvis but it's a solid and playable game in the end (if you ignore that bug). As for Insects in Space, I am a huge fan and have a huge high-score (over 600,000). It's quintessentially Sensible, taking the basic premise and upping the ante - with Martin Galway's incredible score and sound FX added to Jon Hare's clever graphics.

Not a bad effort, but I can sort of see why it never made it to release. Had it been a VIC release, it would have been solid, but the C64 was capable of much better -- as evidenced by the other games you showed in this vid! Still, always interesting to see these unreleased games eventually emerge many years later.

Supposedly, the story is that once Tramiel acquired the Atari consumer side, he put a stop to C64 Atarisoft stuff (specifically). Business is War in action right from the start! The story about Joust is far more interesting of course - from an original conversion which was shelved to porting the A8 version in 3 weeks was surprising, but considering how many times it happened on other micros, I shouldn't be. But yeah, seeing stuff recovered and made available gives me a lot of joy. Even if it's what could have beens, it still is great for the wider history of the medium!

I remember watching you play this on stream, and it was the first time I’d ever seen it. I was hooked from the amazing story introduction (which you highlight), and it’s a great, multi-faceted shoot ‘em up. I decided to buy it on Switch as my main way to play it. I liked the modern quality of life improvements, but of course I also put it on my Mega Everdrive for when I have the real hardware itch! The graphics are so good, too, and one thing you point out is how well they used colours and those defined graphics to make it easy to pick your weapon. I really appreciated that. Catching you play it on stream beforehand really helped me too, as I was able to slot in and play it straight away when I picked it up, which rarely happens to me these days!

I don't know whether that's worth a topic of its own, but there's an immediacy I love with shmups of the 8/16-bit era which gets lost out in many later ones. Don't get me wrong: there's plenty of great ones in the later eras, but the added layers mean there's a bit more concentration required to really get in the zone. I guess deep down, I kind of think had it been localised BITD, Gley Lancer could have done well, but alas… so I'm glad it got the localisation it deserved, even if it was 30 years later ;)

This is one I discovered recently, and it's great that it is more widely available with a translation into English. I did notice there was some flicker at the bottom of the screen throughout - is that a capture issue or something that was happening on the hardware?

The dots? That's what's known as CRAM dots. As far as I can understand (ie. I've not actually written code for an MD), if the colour memory is accessed when the display is visible, whatever is read gets displayed on the bottom of the screen. It's a hardware bug - though emulators (both software and hardware) tend to allow options for those who want to see it - it has no impact beyond that.

For sure! Heck, there's plenty of games which got localised for the US, but never made it over to PAL regions. Which is why the stuff Retro-Bit's been doing of late is pretty neat.
