These lieder mark some of the first steps of Webern in the so-called "free" atonality, that will lead him mainly though vocal works (op. 12 to 19) to serialism in instrumental works, op. 20 and 21. It is highly interesting to follow his evolution in the "free" atonal world from op. 3 to op. 19, showing how he was led to the "serial" universe perfectly achieved in op. 21.
