Interesting video and good to see an experienced and knowledgeable person talk about it. I don't share all of your preferences, but i welcomed listening to them hoping to improve my setup which drives me mental. I think the U-brake setup is fundamentally flawed still, and there's still ZERO discussion about rim surfaces being the main contributor of braking performance, which is something that the bike trials world has known for decades. Though Odyssey are really the only ones who have done something about it, but yet it's still not where it needs to be imo. I ride in a mixture of environments being from the UK. It's moisture heavy or dry air week to week, and can be dusty or clean too. This plays havoc with consistent braking. Thanks for the video

Wouldn't it be easier to just have a religious enlightening and start believing in chain tensioners again? You do realize tensioners died in the 80's for our sins and rose again 30 years later to show us how easy life can be and hardware stores are the work of the devil?? Find the path of enlightenment sir and your soul will be saved with the rest of us☠️

I have forward-facing dropouts and few if any tensioners will fit. I'm giving this idea a go!

Did you remove some of the lower part of the steer tube for extra clearance? I have pitchforks with a large hole drilled in them but I thought about cutting the backside of them for more cable clearance
@pwh4130
@pwh4130 3 жыл бұрын
Clearance isn't an issue for me because I don't run 2.3" or bigger tires. I'd advise against cutting forks because they are heat treated and you don't want to use a power tool that can reheat the zone or use a hacksaw because it will be a difficult process.

Gonna have a "Oh ffs shut up TJ" moment. A few things to point out and I'm going to preface this by saying I will put my front brakes up against any other riders at any point in time in the history of flatland and be confident they'll either be among the best or come out on top: 1. You absolutely do not need to use grease at where the cable enters the housing. If you do this it will eventually attract and build up gunk which reduces the lifespan of the cable. Putting a tiny tiny tiny pinch on where the cable sits in the lever is fine but that's it. 2. The ferrule cap puts even pressure on the housing and stiffens up the pull. You should absolutely put it on. What you should do is make sure the metal inside of the housing is trimmed evenly all around, and open up the teflon housing a tiny bit with a piece of brake cable so that neither interfere or rub against the ferrule. If you do this your brakes will pull much smoother and be much stiffer, the housing won't deform in the barrel, and it will just last longer. 3. If you have to use a zip tie you cut your cable and housing to the wrong length. If it's cut correctly the cable will not hit your tire when you scuff or squeak while it hangs loose. I usually warm up with pedal hang 5 pinkie squeaks where my left foot is what i use for scuffing so if this was an issue I'd feel it immediately. I would avoid using tri-flo. It's really not that great of a lube for brakes and tends to get sluggish over time. I'd recommend this: www.amazon.com/Rock-Cable-Magic-Lubricant-1-Ounce/dp/B000IQEC0U/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-drs-ajax1_0?cv_ct_cx=cable+magic&dchild=1&keywords=cable+magic&pd_rd_i=B000IQEC0U&pd_rd_r=a613d472-8db1-4675-ba31-1ac0fdf86426&pd_rd_w=okPTX&pd_rd_wg=fRMrh&pf_rd_p=037ca9fd-790e-4a16-836b-14da89aed20e&pf_rd_r=BN84CDGWWA8HY2RPXHG8&psc=1&qid=1601837230&sr=1-1-25b07e09-600a-4f0d-816e-b06387f8bcf1 Vigorously shake it up before dripping a bit down the housing. A little bit goes a long way and it lasts for years. I rode the same brake cable from 2012 to 2015. Put my bike in the garage and pulled it out this year and my brakes still worked well all things considered. I should probably do a video on how I set up my front brakes.

Interesting. I think all us experienced addicts of the brake world have mostly found what works for us with the equipment we have in front of us, but yet i bet many of us know improvements can be made. I'm struggling with mine atm, but i put that down to rim surface. I have multiple wheels, calipers, pads, hoses, cables, lubricants and degreasers, but am still not 100% satisfied. My real problem that feels like it can't be fixed is that i ride outside and inside in a multitude of weathers (UK), it's a mix of dry, dusty and moist air. I've never heard about never running a zip tie, and while i'm playing about with my setup atm, i'll take a look into this one. Cheers for the comment.

Hi mate, my sprocket on skyway 2 is different to the one shown here. It’s more the old style with a lock pin on it and when u remove the lock pin the sprocket comes off. My sprocket is slipping when I pedal. Is it possible to take off the mechanism behind the sprocket? It keeps turning when I try to remove it and looks like there is a special key needed to remove it. Cheers :)

Linear cables are design for low pressure derailleurs. Brakes are hig pressure. Also, linear cable don't bed around the fork leg and feel spongey. Just use a basic slick cable.

Great video mate. I’m looking at getting back on a bike after a 16 year break, I’m 6ft tall and 250lb, just mainly wanting something to ride around with my kids, pop a few manuals around the place, and also take it to the local dirt tracks and ride around (no jumps). I live in New Zealand and the local market doesn’t seem to have the hugest range, what size/style bike would you recommend?

Also, your logic regarding linear cables makes sense, and I've heard it before, so why does it seem like BMX companies are selling more linear than coiled cables nowadays?
@pwh4130
@pwh4130 4 жыл бұрын
Guess it's time to answer your question. Marketing. Also, linear cable can wrap around the head tube and not bind better than a regular cable. You know, for people that are too hardcore to get a gyro.
