We sure knew how to make some beautiful aircraft. I've seen the Vulcan fly many times throughout my life and it was always a thrilling experience. That unmistakable howl is something you never forget. The whole of the UK got to see her fly for the very last time when she did a complete flyby tour of the UK. I live near to the Rolls Royce aerospace engine production facility in Derby. Whenever there is something mega special that involves a plane and it's RR engines, we always get treated to a flypast. Thousands turn up. They retired the last one because the airframe is so old and it has done far too many miles for it to be deemed safe to fly any more. Such a shame. For those that do not know, the Vulcan shared the same engines as Concord - Rolls Royce Olympus engines. Also, about 60 years ago, America shut all of it's airspace for a wargames scenario to simulate if anybody could penetrate the airspace with a jet and simulate the delivery of a nuclear bomb. It was really about testing America's radars and their air interceptors. I believe if memory serves me right, we sent 3 simultaneous attacks into US airspace and I believe that we got in and out on 2 of 3 occasions, so it was a massive fail for the US. Their Iron dome wasn't so Iron after all. Naturally, the US department of defence kept that totally secret for many years because they were paranoid that Russia could use the same tactics. So the US got it's house in order again, sorted it's radar out, made the Iron dome even more impregnable and beefed up the air interceptors capabilities again, and invited us to try again. We achieved the same or similar results as the first time. Again, that got buried for years by the US department of defence. Operation Sky shield. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Sky_Shield

In the 1980's I holidayed, with my wife and two children in Silloth, Cumbria, England. Across the Solway Firth, the bombing range in the Galloway hills was used by various fighter jets to practice bombing. One morning we were standing next to our caravan when we saw this huge aircraft fly low over the campsite. I was an Avro Vulcan and my son (5YO) and I were gobsmacked at the size and noise of the plane. This was practise runs for the Falklands campaign. Awesome!!

I believe it was the Vulcan that " bombed" the US twice during a exercise to test the detection and interception systems ..... I'm going back to the days before satilites and the height of the cold war. The Vulcans got through expecting to be escorted by the USAF for some time until it was clear they had completed the task..... the US blocked and censored any public reporting, not because of the embarrassment but to avoid public alarm and have time to plug the gaps in the air defence grid....... There is an epic story about how a Vulcan managed to bomb the runway at Port Stanley in the Falklands during the brief occupation by Argentina in 1982.. 2 Vulcans ( one rescued from being stripped for parts) 12 or so refueling aircraft and 16000 kms round trip to drop a few bombs that in the end, caused little damage but caused the Argentine air force to abandon the Falklands and operate from Argentina ( 400+/- kms away from the upcoming battle) it's a true story

American radar plane (big saucer on top.) landed at our base in Cornwall, Whilst offloading the crew, a Vulcan took off to return to home base (landed at our base night before, because of weather at home.) The Vulcan took off, and all the Americans just stood there with their mouths hanging open. The one nearest to me said, "jeeez ! Will you look at that thing GO!". Proud to be a Brit that day.
