This was SO much better than the GMA and X-Factor versions of this performance! She genuinely seemed to be enjoying herself and having fun with the crowd and with the performance! That was always something I felt she was lacking in her US and UK performances during the start of the Circus era. I always felt it was hard for her to let her guard down after her “comeback” bc of how much of a role the American public and media played in tearing her down and enjoying watching her struggle with real life problems which ultimately led to her freedom being taken from her for over a decade. To stand in front of the world after everything she went through and knowing that everyone was just waiting for her to slip up during her performances took an INCREDIBLE amount of courage and inner strength. I would always watch her eyes and face during these early Circus promotional shows and could see her doubting herself for the first time ever on stage and visibly detaching herself from the performance at times or being very cognizant of making sure she didn’t miss a beat or cue planned for her during a show. She would occasionally let loose and find her confidence/groove again, but then she would catch herself letting down her wall while getting lost in the performance and her eyes would shift and she would start moving more stiffly during the dance numbers instead of moving naturally and trusting in herself to do it as she always had before everything went upside down. She completely lost her motivation during the femme fatale era bc they lied to her and finalized what she was told was a TEMPORARY conservatorship. I love that album but I feel guilty about it bc I know she does not look back on that era fondly at all! She started to get her spark and fire back during the Glory album and parts of her Vegas residency, which led to her being brutalized by her family and her handlers. At least she is free now and she deserves to be happy and for us to let her be! We should acknowledge her immense talent and thank her for all she has given to her fans and to music and pop culture. She is a legit musical icon and a rare talent that we likely will never see again.
