This is such a great song. Growing up in Italy, it was used as the end theme of a tv documentary titled 'Avventura' con Carlo Mauri. Many a great memories of my formative years.

The lyrics of Procol Harum's songs have always been incredibly abstract to me, The imagery is very powerful and stirring. If there were a comparison to be made, I would compare it to a Salvador Dali painting. There's an obvious theme combined with disciplined precision, but a lack of order and continuity. If you try to follow their lyrics as a story, it doesn't make total sense, but it's all good 'cause what's lacking is made up for by a collection of random, loosely related images all of which are very powerful and inspiring.

My theory is the cook intentionally or accidently poisoned the captain and crew. As bacterial infection sets in, they sail aimlessly for seven days until they die and imagine they arrived at the perfect beach. The story is found in a captain's log washed up on shore.
