Is the bassline playing in D dorian mode because it is playing a B and not Bb? Can you play both D minor (Aeolian) and D Dorian over it? Any suggestion or reasoning on how I can play some nice lines over it? I am playing piano..
@jazzguitar4all
@jazzguitar4all Жыл бұрын
Good ears! Indeed the 6th degree is being played both on the bass and the piano part. The reason I used the Dorian mode is that it is by far the most common/used minor mode by Jazz players. And especially over static minor vamps. In that sense, and purely theoretically speaking, you should improvise over it using the dorian mode. However, in "real life" scenarios, players will mix different minor modes regardless of what's being played over the bass. Maybe if your intention is to really nail that Aeolian sound, it might be better to use a strictly Aeolian backing track (here's an idea for a future backing track!). But in most cases, and especially if you want to experiment with different minor sounds - this backing track should serve you well

@@jazzguitar4all Isn't this a Dm9 chord since you're playing an E in the chord?
@jazzguitar4all
@jazzguitar4all Жыл бұрын
Once again, you're correct. In Jazz music we usually give chords in their basic forms (7th chords in the case of Jazz). Then it's up to the player to interpret it rhytmically/harmonically. Adding extension notes is a common practice in that regard

Great option for practicing Modal improvisation over minors scales (Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian). Thanks!

Really glad you enjoy it! You can definitely practice modal improvisation over this playalong. However, it would work best using the Dorian mode, since I'll sometimes emphasis the 6th degree, as opposed to a flatted 6th you'll find on both Aeolian and Phrygian modes. It doesn't mean you can't practice these modes, but it's a good thing to notice.

I'm afraid I don't have a transcription made for the piano in the background (although I was the one to play this piano part 🙂). I did made sure to include chord symbols and bar lines throughout the tablature, so you could associate the lines with the corresponding chord progressions. That's usually enough for the average jazz student. In case you want to understand the rhythmic aspect of accompaniment in Jazz, I suggest you to google/KZbin search for "jazz comping". Hey, I might even make a lesson on this subject myself 😀 Appreciate your comment, and hope you found this etude useful for what it is 🙏🏼

I love teaching Autumn Leaves to my beginning-intermediate students, since it's a great standard for learning and practicing ii-V-I licks, both in major AND minor! Basically you can divide the whole tune into 4 bars segments, some would be Major ii-V-I in Bbmaj7 (you can actually ignore the Ebmaj7 on the fourth bar of each segment), while the rest are minor ii-V-i in Gm. So actually each chorus of Autumn Leaves can be seen as a resource for both Major and minor ii-V-I licks (you get 3 Major and 5 minor ii-V-i licks on every chorus). Try stealing some of these licks and try implementing them over different standards! 🎸🔥🤘🏼
