Yep, had to deal with low Level Wind shear called out in a Speci during my second long cross-country. I ended up high and was not going to force it down. I did a go around, took a breath and landed dealing with the crazy winds. I put her down gently. But to say the least, I was a bit scared and glad I did the go around. Never ever force a landing. After taking a break and getting back in the airplane I Looked at the crazy wind socks. After the required checklist items and so on, I took off and I made for darn sure to get extra rotate speed and rotate gently and had to really fly the plane as it was turburlant. . IYK is close to a mountain and then I have to fly close to the mountain to keep out of the Restricted. Got back to my home airport in Mammoth, and the wind changed her mind two times, and then I selected to the runway to land based on the crazy wind direction. After landing I was super thirsty. I did not drink enough water. One or two little bottles of water does not cut it on a Cross-country.

During the check-ride, you are not allowed to go to the legend. When reading a Metar or Taf. Also, you are expected to know all of the symbols for the observations. Better know all of the symbols. Fog, Rain, Thunderstorm, dust, haze, better know how to read the metars on the observation page without clicking on the metal reading the metal like you just read.

Disapproval, stating greater than 30 KTS for a convective Sigmet instead of 50 KTS and than later correcting will cause the DPE to issue you a Disapproval. . The DPE will only hear the first thing out of your mouth. No Joke.

Very very good. But one question do we not subtract 5/6 hours from Zulu to get local time? Very good and easy to follow.
@CofieldAviation7 ай бұрын
Yes but It depends upon where you are and if on daylight savings time or not. A good place to check is the chart supplement (A/FD?). It will give you the conversion to Zulu time from military time for a particular airport.

@@CofieldAviation Gotcha, well, you are definitely great at teaching and instructing and thanks so much for making these videos and taking the time to do them. I know a lot goes into them. I live in Georgia and I am preparing for my private pilot Check ride in a little over a week. I’ve had a good experience so far with my instructor but I know you would have been Fantastic to work with and train with. You’re teaching style wonderful and easy to understand. I can’t believe how much I’ve learned by the end of each of your videos. Keep up the great work and stay safe. Blue skies:) Chad

Why does VS1 (clean with no flaps) stall speed show so high? I don't stall a 172M until almost 40 knots or less indicated with just me and full fuel. In other words, I can slow flight clean well under the green arc. Separate question, why are no power landings under 30 degree flaps get taught so often to private pilots? Flying during my instrument rating, a power on landing at 1700 rpm by controlling a stabilized approach with configuration (flaps) and pitch is way more comfortable. Not yo-yoing up and down and not so steep of an approach angle. Is it due to pattern work vs straight in? Inexperience of the pilot? Easier? Could it reduce or eliminate the need to slipping to lose altitude producing a more controlled approach? Sorry for so many questions. Hopefully, they are understood.
@CofieldAviation9 ай бұрын
So if you watch performance and limitations Part II video it will explain why. It’s because of the difference between indicated and calibrated airspeed. Look in your AFM/POH in the performance section to determine the difference in IAS and CAS. For example our 172M when it indicates 40, calibrated airspeed is 53! Also the stall speed on the airspeed indicator (Vs) is at max gross weight. So of course stall speed chances with weight (also explained in performance and limitations Part II video), meaning wings level at 1g, if your not a max weight, the stall speed would be lower than published Vs1.
@CofieldAviation9 ай бұрын
To me, every landing is a power off landing, except for a soft field landing when power may be needed to make a smooth touchdown. The way I teach landings is to fly as close to the runway as possible and not let it touch. It’s a transition on short final to slow flight and then to a power off stall. This prevents porpoising when landing with an airspeed that the wings still want to fly. It’s a much better way to keep from damaging the airplane via porpoising for students and low time pilots. Once you gain more skill then you can easily do what you are suggesting and not damage the nosewheel/ still land on the mains. So basically I’m saying, doing a power off stall just above the runway is a better way to initially teach landings in my opinion. A second thing about the forward slip to landing. I agree with you that the slip to landing is unstabilized. In the modern day aircraft, we have flaps now, so there is no reason to slip the airplane. I feel as though, if you have to slip the airplane with flaps, then the approach is unstabilized, and you should do a go around. I feel as though a forward slip is only reserved for the emergency approach and landing to be able to use flaps and slip to put it down on a spot in an emergency situation.

Thank you for these videos! They may more than you may know! I’m getting ready for my check ride soon and there are multiple areas that I have struggled with. Your videos were laid out so perfectly, and your teaching style done so strategically, that I was able to understand things that I wasn’t with anyone else, no matter how much I tried. I simply couldn’t retain certain information. I am so much better prepared now because of the time you’ve taken me to make these videos. And I can actually retain and visualize the things you’ve taught and the graphics you used. Thanks again! And please keep uploading these whenever you’re able.😊
