$25 pounds?! That is REALLY low
@SpaceForEdit6 күн бұрын
Agreed, but it also gives you an indication of what designers in the UK are earning. It has gone up slightly since 2018 when I worked on this project, but in general, designers are still very undervalued here.
@hopefully22246 күн бұрын
@ wow! Im sorry to learn that! The amount of money and time we save people, we are worth our weight in gold! In my area on average we get $125 - $300 per hour.

I know, mad, isn't it? I'm really starting to lose hope in this country. Independant designers also have to compete with construction and fitout companies that offer free design service. So it's a tough world out there for us.

I guess it's unaesthetic in a way that it's not quite staged like most Instagram content. It's just real snippets of my day no matter the angle or lighting 😁 And this is Manchester UK. It's got lots of charm and modern features at the same time.

Hi thank you for this video. Is design brief sale as a design proposal? Which one do you give to clients first if these are different. Which other documents do I give my client throughout design processes?
@SpaceForEdit19 күн бұрын
I'm not sure if I understand the question. Design brief is a document that holds all of the information that you need to get started on creating your designs. You will keep this mostly for your own records. Sometimes the client might want a copy too. I like to send them one so that we are all on the same page. Fee proposal is a document that holds information about the costs of your design work. This is presented to the client after the briefing session. Hope this helps! 👍

@SpaceForEditАй бұрын
Of course, that is the standard procedure. But real life throws all kinds of variations at you, and you have to adapt. Not even everyone is always in a position to say 'it's either my way or I am not working with you'. It is definitely a mindset to be leading the conversation with, but that is just how it plays out every time. I have discussed this with a lot of designers and trades professionals, and they have been in similar situations.

I am honestly a bit nervous, I worked in retail and restaurant for three years, but nothing for something that I love about like my career. I am going to a technical school on the side for interior design. Hopefully all goes well! Thanks for the video it was really informational, especially for the do’s & donts of your portfolio!

Just show them your enthusiasm about the job and willingness to learn. You'll get there eventually! Maybe also look at a few more places to inquire for internships even if they don't advertise it. I'm a mum to two children - 2.5 years and 4.5 years old. I work full time for a design firm in Melbourne and find it a really challenging juggle. The only way I can make it work is by being able to WFH full time, have a partner who is a shift worker and having our two children in paid daycare 3 days a week. Given our industry is so female dominated I do not understand why more places aren't accepting of job share/ WFH/ flexible hours etc. Your video raises lots of great points on being a parent and an Interior Designer. I think we still have so much to offer the industry, it's just a shame most employers don't see it.

No problem, that's exactly why I'm making this content. There's so much to share about our job/industry and if I can help other designers then why not To answer your question- I think this would depend on the nature of the project. But I always make a note on all of my drawings that they are for reference only and the contractor should carry out their own survey prior to the install. This way I'm protected and can still get on with the work 👍

Trust your designer with what?! If my designer has an idea I don’t like, what am I supposed to do?
@SpaceForEdit4 ай бұрын
I you're uncomfortable with your designer's ideas, then you should definitely raise that and see where things have maybe been 'lost in translation'. Sometimes, it's at the very beginning during the briefing/ discovery stage or maybe during the concept design phase when the look and feel images are taking shape. It should be a back and forth conversation between you and your designer. It's in the designer's interests to deliver the best design that suits your needs. The piece about trusting the designer was meant more like and extra push, going for something that feel a little bit unfamiliar. If you're not happy with the whole proposal then of course make sure to communicate this to your designer 👍 Hope this helps!
@cheriehumphrey56574 ай бұрын
@@SpaceForEdit thank you for your reply. I think some designers feel they are hired to create something and then prevail on “I’m the expert” or “trust me” when the customer is concerned about the idea(s). I’m also curious, do designers get kickbacks for the large ticket items like cabinets, finders fee for contractors, Etc.? And if so, is this something designers disclose?
@SpaceForEdit4 ай бұрын
I believe that both parties should feel equally comfortable to share their ideas during the design process. It's a 'back and forth' kind of situation and a collaborative process. And yes, designers do get kickbacks from FF&E and other services. It's quite a normal practice in the industry. But this should always be mentioned in the contract, so if you have any concerns around that topic, then you can raise them before signing the contract.
