I see when the lady is in the saddle-up and does her rock step to start her swivel left into position, her left foot steps out and points left. When the gentleman does his rock step he steps to his right which gets you lined up nicely for the touch steps.

Would y'all please make sure to distinguish between all the other shags out there. I would think the best way to describe this as smooth, slot swing dancing. Not St Louis shag, Carolina shag, or Collegiate shag.

So it's always back on your right foot? (ladies) The last step?
@lindab556910 ай бұрын
I don't think you've gotten a reply, so the last two steps ("five-six") are a rock step. For women it's back on your right foot, and then forward with your left. This gets you ready for your next basic.

I live in WA state. Are there teachers/groups here? I love watching couples perform the shag. I would love to learn the moves, but, if no one does it out here, I’ll just be dancing with myself 😢 Thx 😊

Beginners should add this right after basic and m/f turns. Rather than slightly more difficult steps e.g. sugarfoot and walk up/back. These are say & non-frustrating!

Excellent turn steps, easy to learn. Look great! We’ve forgotten so many steps; this makes it easier to get back into shag.

Suggest you trade in for a different mic. Maybe something wireless that clips on. So we don't hear the echo-ey room air. Should greatly improve the production value. Other than that, your enthusiasm for the dance is contagious!

Thanks -- we accidentally left a CD player going in the background. We have fixed it on the newer videos. So sorry for the background noise in this one.

@@todancetwo Hello you both. I do watch over and over again till I get the step right. It's easy to follow with simple instructions. Best of all, its so nice to see you both so passionate about dancing n teaching at this juncture. Me n Hilda (my wifey) also like to dance so we both go out social dancing Saturday evenings where they play Jive, cha cha, waltz n foxtrot. Shag not being popular here they almost never play beach/blues music suitable for shag. But I dance at home n share Shag videos with my friends. I do hope to see more instructional videos from you both in near future.

How does the male lead the female into a stutter step? Is there a commonly understood way to do this, or should the dancers just come to an understanding on their own lead indication?
@ToddLouiseDickson2 жыл бұрын
Actually, if both dancers do the stutter step as we demonstrated, it is a called step that is memorized by the dancers. However, either dancer can "add in" a stutter in a basic on additional counts &5 &6 instead of just 5, 6. I hope this helps.

Everything that has been thought here is found in the original mother dance, the street dance by blacks - Lindy Hope. I don't see any difference between shag rock 'n roll and jive . They are All the same and a small part of Lady Hop. I suppose during the 1920s to 1960s it was very difficult for the non blacks to accept a black street dance into the mainstream , so they defined different names for parts of that dance and called it a new dance, their own dance...
@todancetwo2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are very similar and from the same type of swing-style dances. The Carolina Shag is a smooth version with counts the same as East Coast Swing. It is usually a 6-count basic. The Lindy Hop and Jive style dances are usually an 8-count step.
