Completely fits with the emotion and tempo of "Ottoman's Army Band". It is important to know that Mozart composed this piece in the years close to Ottoman's tried to invade Vienna.

Interpreted by someone who has actually seen a marching band march past him in the street.

Gould going always for the extremes. In this case the tempo is too slow. This is a march FGS. Marches are supposed to be played at parades. Can someone parade in Gould's tempo? Now play the same video at 1,25 speed and you are going to see the difference.

Amazing how the fanboys will fawn over absolutely everything Gould played, no matter how ridiculous the interpretation.

So many comments on whether this is the way it should be played or not, but I see no link to the original score in Mozart's handwriting, where can I find it to decide for myself?

Used to play this for students about to tackle the Turkish March, then we'd hear a few other interpretations, but I always loved to start with Gould. As Mr. MacKay says below, there is clarity, and no rushing. Didn't we all rush the hell out of this when we learned it? I know I did. Thank you for posting this seminal recording.

People saying you can play it better, this is the actual tempo. If you play it fast, you're playing it wrong.

While I do think it sounds a lot better in this tempo (and more like a march, too!), it's worth noting that in the first edition print states the tempo should be "allegrino" which is similar to "allegretto", so typically it would be around 110-120 BPM. So it is faster in the original (or at least what we've got, since the full manuscript hasn't been found) but I agree with you. This is how it should be played.

Quelle clarté, quelle lumière dans son jeu. Glenn Gould est une étoile qui est le messager des 'peintres' coloristes qui nous transportent loin de notre petite matérialité.
