This isn't a true representation of the original DOS version. For most DOS games on Steam/GOG the default setting of DOSBox is to run the game with normal(x2) upscaler, which basically doubles the resolution but makes everything look way more pixelated than it actually is. If you open the config file in the game directory and set the scaler = none, then you will see the sprites and artwork look a little sharper with less pixelation. That's the unaltered way it would've originally looked.

I have a very old computer, so I can't run either the remaster or The Force Engine (you know, because older computers aren't capable of actually doing anything at all), but a few years ago, I played through Dark Forces using DOSBox. I used a version that had save states, so it basically had quicksave and quickload. I know many people will consider that cheating, but it's too easy to walk off a ledge and die. Besides, I originally played this game using an analog joystick, and it's a wonder that I was even able to finish it on Easy mode that way, so I think I earned a little help. In addition, I used a program called OverlayXHair to put a crosshair in the middle of the acreen, and a program call GlovePIE that allows you to map keyboard keys to the mouse movements and mouse wheel. So I was able to use the mouse for looking up and down (such as it is in a 2.5D game), and switch weapons with the scroll wheel. Of course that lead to some swearing as the game seemed to crash when I'd switch weapons while crouching. Turns out that the combination of the CTRL key for crouching, and the weapon switch key, was the DOSBox hotkey for quiting. Once I remapped that, everything was good. The one complaint I have about the original game is that there's no way to turn off the auto aim. Which makes it impossible to shoot exploding cannisters near enemies, or hit enemies on a ledge with the concussion rifle. In this regard, I think I'd prefer The Force Engine over the remastered game's improved graphics. I just hope that the availability of the remastered version doesn't discourage the author of The Force Engine from continuing to develop it. It would be nice to see the option to use 3D models for the NPCs and items, like many Doom ports allow. They could pull most of them right out of Jedi Knight.
@Triple-M8223 ай бұрын
Thanks for all the info. I played with DarkXL before The Force Engine was around. I recently tried the Night Dive remaster. The visuals are great but there is no way to turn auto aim off and the music had tracks out of sync. Hoping that gets patched.

Great video I did already have the force engine and the original game so opt out of buying the remaster, great for consoles of course but I feel they should of maybe added a couple extra modes and maybe coop to be worthy of the 40 aud. Thats my opinion. Possible way to fix your OBS is to run it in administration mode this worked for me in the past.
@requiemcollectiblesgaming3 ай бұрын
Thank you! Wise. True and Coop would have been amazing and worth the price at that point. And thanks, i'll try it!
I believe that the remaster has bloom effects that can be turned on if you want them. Doesn't really matter to me. I've already played through this game in its entirety on hard using DOSBox so there isn't much reason for be to get this remaster than just to check it out. The remaster is definitely a no go for me at its current price. The Force Engine definitely looks like the definitive version to make the game playable without using DOSBox and to be able to enhance the game without taking away the charm of the old cinematic graphics instead of looking all cartoony. For PC gamers I think the Force Engine is the clear choice. However this is now the best console version by far because the PS1 port back in the day was terrible. So if this is your first time playing this game and you play on a console, this game is completely worth the $30 I think.
@requiemcollectiblesgaming3 ай бұрын
Perfectly said. Yeah it seems i must have looked over the bloom effect for some reason. I agree with that statement. If i only played console i would probably buy it!

I didn't think Nightdive Studios would release the remastered version so expensive. I was expecting a price like 40% cheaper because this is a 1995 game remastered, and not a brand new game, and IMO they're charging a price equivalent of a brand new game. I know that's probably Disney's fault, because when it comes to Star Wars, Disney is pretty good fucking up
@requiemcollectiblesgaming4 ай бұрын
yeah, i was surprised by the price, also considering that night dives previous releases seemed to have more content in them. Disney is pretty much trash lol

The best advice i can give you guys is to buy the original steam version for $1.50 on cd keys and then just convert it to the force engine mod. The force engine mod is the exact same thing as the remaster, Only the textures haven't been dumped and scaled with ai. That being said the force engine mod still looks amazing and runs perfect and will save you $28.50 and looks almost just as good.
@requiemcollectiblesgaming4 ай бұрын
Sounds like solid advice. I agree 👍. Now, it would be awesome if the upscaled textures can be ported into The Force Engine
@Megladong4 ай бұрын
@@requiemcollectiblesgaming yea i think so too. Not trying to bad mouth the game or anything but this remaster was obviously just a texture pack on top of the force engine (a very good one at that but still). And so for 30$ that is way too much. 10$ i think would be a fair price and i would've purchased it had that been the case.
@requiemcollectiblesgaming4 ай бұрын
@@Megladong 100% the only thing preventing buyers remorse is the face that hopefully this video can help others decide if thy feel similar or not.
@Cimlite3 ай бұрын
@@Megladong That's not entirely true though. I have both and I can say that the remaster runs and feels way better than The Force Engine. For starters, TFE has this weird stuttery feel when moving around (you can even see it in the video)... it's always had this and it's regardless of what settings you set. It's difficult to pin down what the issue is, but it just doesn't feel great. It also has some oddities with the mouse control. It's like horizontal and vertical input is handled differently, and makes the game feel very imprecise. The remaster has none of that, it runs perfectly smooth and just feels better to play. Now, is that worth almost 30 dollars? Probably not. But to say that remaster is just a is just a "texture pack" isn't accurate either imo.
@Megladong3 ай бұрын
@@Cimlite completely disagree sorry. My game runs smooth as butter. 0 stutters or Microstutter, and there is no "oddities" with mouse control. I even use a ps4 controller perfectly. Might want to do some trouble shooting and cap your framerate with riva tuner.

This was an old favorite of mine many many yeats ago. Ive already played the game on The Force Engine in the past and wanted to see what Nightdive did since they contacted Lucius from The Force Engine for tips. Well I returned the ND remaster but will probably buy it back during a sale. TFE has so many more things you can do to tweak the game to your liking. Packed full of graphics options etc. Am I just biased because Ive already used TFE a few times?
@requiemcollectiblesgaming4 ай бұрын
I totally agree. Oh wow, so they did communicate with the TFE team? That's awesome! i feel like they should have kept the options menu or probably just enhanced the force engine. I do like the art remastering but other than that i get more use out of the Force Engine. I think you just make sense lol and i agree!
