@@ryanmartin9400 there are a lot of places that you just... Can't get to without having to go on main roads (ie Wonderland Rd's bike lane is in HORRIBLE condition). And bike lanes starting and stopping are the biggest barrier for many. Think, would you let your kid ride to school? And how do you get to the TVP or trails safely?

Heya all the way from Boston! Well, the metro Boston area in Somerville. This was a cool conversation to listen in on. I feel very fortunate to live in a City with a Mayor who bikes and a Pedestrian and Transit Advisory Committee who are accelerating changes already made and committed to years ago.

Ben, thank you so much for this. Great video. I started researching ebikes almost 2 years ago and you were one of my first channels that I saw on KZbin. Now i am a daily ebike user. Do you plan on doing a video about how bikes help small businesses or could direct me to great places, or videos that I can use to gather information. I work with small businesses and would LOVE to give them great information.

We did an e-biking camping trip to Pinery park this summer, it was great, the journey is half the fun with lovely scenery and roadside picnics. Plus my wife is doing another trip with girlfriends and is taking a communeauto. It's all doable with a bit of planning and is super cost effective for our occasional needs.

I live in Etobicoke and I have to say that my experience driving on Bloor after the bike lanes went in isn't any worse than it was before. It's always been a slow drive, what with street parking, lots of intersections, pedestrian crossings, etc. It's never been a street that you would use to get from point A to B quickly. And if you don't like the traffic, there's a subway running under the damn thing.

I live at Jane and Bloor, and the bike lanes here have improved pedestrian safety sooooooo much. This is all about Doug not wanting anything in his way when he drives home from Queen's Park after work, and it's empowered by a handful of rich business owners on the Royal York stretch who are funding a protest group.

I mean cars are a good way to get around, they get you to work fast especially if where you work is far from home like a 30 min drive, they are good for transporting groceries, bikes can do that as well but you have to have one of those bike trailers and it's kinda hard to bike in the winter, a bus would be a pain to carry groceries around in if you have a lot of groceries, and buses make stops which make you get home later, and since buses are a very low suspension vehicle they can get stuck in the winter some times then you have to wait for a backup bus to arrive, so yeah I kinda see why cars are big in Ontario, they are just very reliable in multiple situations
@troubleturkey
@troubleturkey Күн бұрын
Ideally, one wouldn’t have to drive for groceries. If someone could walk 5min to the grocery store it wouldn’t be that bad, it would become part of someone’s routine to go to the grocery store and get food. As more people use public transport the wait times would come down as more routes would be made. There’d be little to no traffic jams so your commute would become shorter in time. Aswell, in a well designed city the things someone needs (not only food, but medicine, jobs, nature, etc) would be within a 15min circle, so you literally wouldn’t need to drive. You haven’t winter cycled, it is not as difficult as people make it out to be. I live in Canada and I can do it pretty easily. In countries where winter cycling is a priority it’s nearly as easy as cycling in the summer. You are still insanely car brained.

Less of crap about helmets. You don't wear one when walking around or driving a car, both of which are more likly to have head injury. I have less chance of falling from cycling than I do for walking around downtown Toronto. Also where in Ontario can you fit a car lane in a bike lane? And where do you see a bike lane replacing a trafic lane? This argument is fictional, this is a strange power power grab from the province for what should obviously be a municipal issue.

It is easy to tell why Toronto streetcars are less full than they could be (though they are rarely empty), they go with the car traffic and get stuck in congestion they do not cause. Then it is often faster to walk, actually.

cody macrae (balance on blloor) is not even a commuter cyclist, he only cycle recreationally. the arguments: 1. first responders can get stuck in traffic. just witnessed this morning on a main artery with two lanes each way. 2. small businesses are suffering. is it economic times or bike lanes the root cause? will removing bike lanes discourage cyclists patronage, will it necessarily boost sales, what if it doesn't?
@DizzyDiddy
@DizzyDiddy 3 күн бұрын
1. If the bike lanes take up enough space and are adequately separated then first responders can use them in emergencies. This is what is done in the Netherlands to get around traffic build-up. It's much easier for bikes to move out of the way than it is for cars. 2. Bike lanes are often scape goats for businesses that are struggling, but studies consistently show that in general bike lanes boost business and generate revenue. Better bike infrastructure is actually a solution to both of the issues being used here to argue against them.

the more urban sprawl grows, the more traffic from surrounding areas will be funnelled into the cities. without densifications and alternatives these traffic jam will only grow and the backtracking will cost ever more in time and taxes.

Ben, what's with the hating on boomers? 10:35 and 12:40 I'm in my 60's and ride just about everywhere all year round, in Edmonton. This story has nothing to do with boomers, it's about knee-jerk reactions, of which yours against boomers is one. Stop with the hate. Small e-motorbikes and class 3 e-bikes need to be banned from bike and multi-use paths. Ban where they can go, not the bike itself.

From what I've seen of GBatteries in Ottawa, they seem to suggest that it's more about how the battery is charged/discharged rather than how many cycles it's used. I guess if it's less hot then the battery doesn't degrade as quickly.

Memories are short, epsecially for painful things. That's why there are second and third children. He seemed to learn from the bike ride, but that pain of riding in traffic has worn off. He needs to be dragged out into it again. I found him extremely annoying for the first part of the video, stating things to be fact that were merely his uninformed opinion. He did show his human side when describing his brother, but then went back to himself depressingly quickly - perhaps editing made it seem worse. A good friend of mine was hit and left for dead in western Ottawa the day before they made the announcement about their over-reaching cycling lane policy. He died 2 days later. My blood still boils whenever I hear them spouting off about it and this video opened the wound. Everyone needs to see him saying what he said about having cycling lanes and ensuring that no cyclists die. It has been a bloodbath on Ottawa roads in the past 3 weeks!

Interesting, but somewhat disturbing until you figure out the diabolically clever plan linking all the bits together.. Ford will be simultaneously closing bike lanes and increasing motor vehicle speed limits. This will save time as motorists get to their accidents in a more timely fashion. Some of the accidents will involve cyclist who may merely have been injured in a lower speed crash but will die in the higher speed crashes. This will help to lower wait times in hospital emergency wards. See, it all makes sense when you put the pieces together.
