For those that want to expand this idea to its logical extreme: The elements are irrelevant in determining the corresponding bricks, elements only really determine the colour of the corresponding bricks (if even that). You do not have to follow Bonomi's element-colour scheme. You can declare that phosphorus is to be represented by purple brick, declare that carbon is to be represented by a black brick instead of blue, etc. These models are based on oxidation states. More specifically, the number of studs on the corresponding brick is equal to the modulo of the oxidation state and eight. A +2 oxidation state would correspond to a brick with 2 studs, a -3 oxidation state would correspond to a brick with 5 studs, etc. Since most elements have multiple oxidation states, there could be multiple distinct bricks representing the same element, and vice versa. At 1:48 the text reads "Attention! It's not stable!!". You can use transparent bricks to account for the discrepancy. That means you can represent ions in this system as well as atoms. In the example, you could add a 6-stud brick of a -2 oxidation state, showing that the incomplete monocarbon(IV) monoxide is of a +2 oxidation state.
