Is he really just using a flat top guitar? Interesting, I thought a weisennborn guitar would be used to produce this sound.

Did you bring your guitar? Then he happens to pull out a Gibson Roy Smeck Radio Grande. Indeed!

If this clip is really from 1932, then it predates the ability to fake it by syncing to a previously-made recording. And looking at Mr. Smeck's hands (what bar control!) it looks absolutely live. Roy Smeck was a vaudeville guy who really could just jump onstage and render a performance that surpasses what mortal men can do. I read that he played 14-16 hours a day, because he had jaw-dropping showcases on banjo, ukulele and standard guitar as well as the Hawaiian style. His only equal on Hawaiian guitar was, of course, the great Sol Hoopii.

it’s funny i always thought there was harp in hawaiian music, but it’s just a thumb strum on the classical guitar, i never even noticed i used to think it was a harp till i saw this!

This is actually quite incredible - what imaginative playing and his approach to the guitar is... well I’ve never seen anything like this... Right so this was a different time and the music is of a different area, but he is like the “Jimi Hendrix” of that time, doing things you normally wouldn’t - and it is so musical and brilliant- just amazing!
