The synth performer next to me, Erin, was the one that ran Mainstage. (serious 🐐. Go check out her Crown cam from this past DCI season as well as her cam from this season!) She used the bottom two keys on her synth to change patches for both of us at the same time since both of our synths were linked to the same Mainstage file.

Is it confusing to work with that keyboard? I play a more basic synthesizer with a cart and speaker and it has dozens of buttons and I don’t know what half of them do but the synthesizers I see in the cams always have so many buttons and computers. Do you have to like click the computer screen or something while you’re playing? And do you got to do like sound changes and adjustments while playing or do you like barely touch buttons that aren’t like sound buttons? What are the computers for? Our band has Malik carts, and they use iPads, but I don’t really see them touching them at all, and they only really touch the buttons on their stations. Is it like that for you or do you have to be programming computers while playing

Everything I wanted, and more...the man included the names of the patches, what a LEGEND! I assume the "Taming the Dragon" pad was custom made for the show? I noticed that your part mirrored that found in the song, but I had no idea that the patch itself was also custom-catered to it. And why did the sample leading into part 3 (4:48)--as awesome as it is--need to be split where you had to press 2 keys?
@RealJoey Жыл бұрын
The Taming the Dragon patch was actually a synthetic patch that we found in either Mainstage, Omnisphere, or Alchemy. Throughout the season, we toyed around with the patch until we got as close as we could’ve to the original source/song because it sounded nothing like it at first. We did the same thing with the “no attack piano” patch in the beginning of The Garden! When it came to the samples at the end of Part 2, we originally only had the first patch, but it was really hard to time that with the entrance of the battery on its own, so we added a second sample to make the transition into the battery/voice feature a bit more seamless
@jburbygo Жыл бұрын
@@RealJoey Oh wow! I'm primarily a marimba player with just an interest in the electronic side in shows, and normally what goes on behind the black box is just that. It's really cool that it sounds like you were able to have some input in finding and toying around with a patch until it sounds right, makes it feel really integrated as a performer I'd imagine. This is wonderful insight, thanks again!

@RealJoey Жыл бұрын
It kinda depends. I’ve been playing piano for about 10 years now and it wasn’t that bad to read the exercises. The hardest part was fitting in with the rest of the ensemble during audition camps.
@SJdrumz Жыл бұрын
@@RealJoey how old were you when you started piano? I played for a few years when I was younger but I haven't played in years and when I graduate I want to play synth for a corp. Is the music difficult?
@RealJoey Жыл бұрын
@@SJdrumz I started when I was either 10 or 11 years old. The music that I got wasn't too difficult to begin with, as it was a "placeholder" part that the electronics coordinator and I rewrote throughout the season. Bloo Synth is the most captivating thing to me, I swear...and you absolutely nailed it my dude. It almost feels wrong to say that some of the biggest earworms for me are stuff like the pre-show audio, the sample at 6:10, and the textures of the patches you play (like 7:12, and 7:35, which I think is an accordion...? and the Electric Counterpoint bit in the BoBP lot tune), since it feels to me like a disservice to all of the performers on the field if I say that...but I guess there's a talented team of audio engineers making sure those sounds give it that quality that's unmistakably Bluecoats. And a fantastic performer to pull it off as well! (I also stan your part under the keytar section, so dream-like and energetic all at once)

@RealJoey Жыл бұрын
Sorry that this is late haha. Definitely get your hands on audition packets as soon as possible and start working on the exercises. Build up the tempos gradually and do what you are most comfortable with. Depending on the audition requirements, look for a solo that best shows your playing abilities. For reference, I'm using a piece by Sibelius for the upcoming camp. Overall, just bring a friendly and positive mindset for the audition camps! Let me know if you have any other specific questions!

I've always wondered how the narration is played, like is it pre-timed or is each segment of the narration recorded separately and a front ensemble member 'plays' each segment in time?
@RealJoey2 жыл бұрын
The narration was spliced into separate samples. The other synth player, Riley, triggered those samples at specific times throughout the show so that it could line up with certain musical moments, such as the “Are you gonna say something to that guy” sample with the battery.
