Lol BS I've always used sand bags and they worked perfectly every time
@FloodProtectionSol
@FloodProtectionSol 2 ай бұрын
The test, real world experience, and studies have shown otherwise. I'm glad you've managed to use them with success, but most don't. Sand is a natural rapid filter so without being coupled with sheeting & boards they won't work. Aside, they're not environmentally friendly, not reusable, and not cost effective.

Presumably the walls surround the area you're looking to protect and this barrier closes off the access. It's possible that the flood risk is at it's height during a period of heavy rain. What happens to the area behind the barrier? Won't it start to fill with water?
@FloodProtectionSol
@FloodProtectionSol 3 ай бұрын
That is correct. It would fill with rainwater, but not overland flow. The area should also be defended against backflow with a Non-Return Valve, see video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHzYaIGPoc6Kmsk . For any water pooling, you can use a puddle pump.

Sandbags with plastic sheeting still more effective considering many places don't have the capacity to use more high tech methods.
@FloodProtectionSol
@FloodProtectionSol 11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately this is a common misconception regarding 'capacity', presumably meaning budget, access to resource etc. A common misconception is that sandbags are a cheap cost- effective method of flood defence; however this is not the case. According to Flood PACT (Parishes and communities together) a sandbag flood protection barrier which is 0.6m high requires 50+ filled sandbags per linear metre. Therefore a linear metre of sandbagging costs a staggering £200 (with each filled sandbag costing £4.00). Therefore covering a 15m entrance could cost £3000 in sandbags alone! Sandbags are incredibly labour intensive and time consuming, and there is often not time to construct them for flash flooding. As they are only usable once the investment is high per flood and there is a tax on disposal of used sandbags. Once used, sandbags are classed as contaminated and can harbour diseases and bacteria - so they should not be reused and need to be disposed of. They tend to hold contaminants such as sewage, and so gloves should be warn when handling them. It is important to remain vigilant for symptoms associated with dirty water, such as Hepatitis or Weil’s disease. We strongly recommend being prepared in advance with flood barriers. Sand is naturally porous and can act as a filter, but to help keep water out they should be used with plastic sheeting. Sandbags are ineffective when compared with specially designed flood protection products which can be deployed far quicker. The main issue with sandbags though is that they do not perform their primary role well. In Sir Michael Pitt’s review of the 2007 floods he states ‘The Review was unable to obtain any significant evidence that sandbags were particularly effective during the 2007 summer floods in providing protection to individual households.’

Informative thanks...so if height from bottom of sump to to top of land height is 1.5 mtrs at a distance of 35mtrs discharge point.... equals 5 mtrs head?
@FloodProtectionSol
@FloodProtectionSol Жыл бұрын
As a rough approximation yes. If there are any right angles etc this can add another m, so potentially 6. It is best to work our friction calculations, but in most instances this 'rule of thumb' can work well.

All sounds very useful but who does a drainage survey and how can I be sure the people I employ know enough about drainage to sort out the problems in the ways suggested by you? I have had a flood survey done by your company some years ago but quite honestly I don ‘t trust anyone to do the work suggested by you.

Good Morning Anne. I hope you're well, glad to hear we were able to assist with the initial survey. We have partner companies who can assist with drainage surveys. We can also oversee projects from survey through to completion, whether in a management capacity, or sourcing materials and utilising our team to install. We have whole of market access and can assist with measures, alongside the survey. Please do get in touch if we can help in any way :)

What’s the point of it if water is coming up the drains?
@FloodProtectionSol
@FloodProtectionSol Жыл бұрын
Hello Anne, thank you for your comment. The puddle sucker is part of an overall solution, in an instance where water is coming up the drains then there are other potential options to explore, such as implementing a non-return valve or a drainage bung. The pump itself is an excellent part of the overall package of measures to minimise flood damage. We are currently in the process of making a video on backflow protection and non-return valves, so stay tuned!

@cjnankervis
@cjnankervis 2 жыл бұрын
Nicely presented. Scientific basis is actually much more conservative on several points. It has neither met a consensus on the cause of the increase jet stream variability, nor on the regional changes in precipitation. Overall, the precipitation rate is broadly consistent on a long-term global average. That balance combined with more intense precipitation has implications for fluctuations in groundwater linked to property subsidence, and flooding. This is something that the banking sector has concerns over, as the main owner of residential buildings. Southern and Eastern England is likely to get drier with more intense bursts of rainfall, since the subtropical high is expected to expand farther to the north. Scotland and the northwest most likely wetter. Most likely a change to wetter weather in winter, and drier summers. Though confidence still remains relatively low, and models are getting too precise in predicting (potentially) misleading information/ details.
