I don't get it. Isn't the TO in charge of the format? In Europe we are allowed to have Regionals or Store Celebrations as a Bo3 or Bo1. For locals it is the same. TO can make them to Bo3 if the capacity and playerbase allow for that.

I don't think you're interpreting Hades correctly. It doesn't have to be the exact same card. For example, you can sacrifice the 2-cost Ursula to play the 7-cost Ursula for free. That is the most obvious current play, however it also works very well with Dragon Mim (since that creates a large threat, bounces back things you want, and still gives you all the ink to replay cards you bounced.) I don't think it is necessarily good enough yet, but the ability is very powerful when it goes off and stands to get better as more versions of characters are released.

This game has got to be one of the most overrated, only loved becuase people are nostalgia blind games i have ever played. The cars feel like shit to drive. The rubber banding is insane. You constatnly get killed by shit you had no way of avoiding or doing anything about. The maps suck. Getting orbs to upgrade your cars is super grindy It messes up the lore cause all the sudden we have this random Kras City place that everyone seems to know about, despite past games saying haven city is the only bug city with Spargus just being made of peoole exiled from haven city. As someone who just finished playing in the Florida Materia Cup, I will share my experience: in 7 rounds I literally played 7 unique decks. It was wild, closest thing was that there was 2 Mono Fire deck but one was Magissa based and the other was similar to the YYTs list. BO1 format hurts and I wish it was BO3. The judges almost had us set up for a top cut to 32 but I guess SquareEnix's system stopped it because once it finally started working they announced it was cut to top 16. For the record I scrubbed out. I played two of my local people who in testing; I beat and I just failed in tournament lol oh and I played a Twins deck because I love FF4.

I had this exact convo on Reddit not too long ago. I hate Bo1. For locals, sure I think it's fine. But for LQs, Materia Cups, etc., the whole tourney needs to be Bo3.You can switch it up a bit, but getting stomped out in a Bo1 because you don't know what opponent is on or you draw super bad sucks. I think big tourneys should go like this: Swiss/Day 1 -Bring 2 decks with normal 2 deck construction rules: On the deck lists you denote which one is Deck A and Deck B -First half of Swiss rounds, everyone is on Deck A. Single Deck Bo3, 75 minutes. -Second half Of Swiss Rounds, everyone on Deck B. Single Deck Bo3, 75 minutes. ---If there are an odd number of Swiss rounds, majority of them are done with Deck A (7 rounds = 4 rounds with Deck A, 3 rounds with Deck B). Top Cut/Day 2 -Standard 2-Deck Bo3, 90 minutes. Players can choose which deck they open with; they don't always have to start with Deck A. I think this is WAY more fun and allows for players to actually feel like they are playing a game of skill/thought instead of getting stomped by the unknown or drawing really bad in Bo1. Switching decks halfway through the day would also make it less of a grind compared to playing the same deck all day. And time/mental fatigue be damned. At this level of play, I'm there to get games in and prove myself. Bo3 means more games and using your brain more. If you can't hang with a possible 14-21 games in a 7 Round Swiss event, that's on you. To me, part of what makes a great competitive player is being able to stick it out for the long haul and continue to do well.

I think the Bo3/Bo1 divide comes from how other Japanese card games run some of their events. I’ve noticed that some games needed to do Bo1 Swiss rounds to accommodate venues better than Bo3 rounds.

I think these more podcast style items are fine but I think it's worth trying some visual that corresponds to the topic(s) at hand. Will help people figure out if they want to just listen while they do other stuff. Almost like a meeting agenda so you know if there's anything worth listening in for. I also think folks expect visuals on youtube so you could lose some folks from that stand point. Content Ideas: I always enjoy someone walking through new deck ideas, the one you did showcasing mono ice and your thoughts while playing was very interesting. Maybe take your question on "is anyone using X card" and trying to show case ideas on how to build around it? Pre-materia cup videos, doing some predictions on decks you'll see, how you think the meta might play, sort of like they do before sports match ups. Not sure if you know who's going to an event but predicting what they might bring and how they might do could be one angle for content. Also might be interesting if you could interview some of the more notable players prior or after an event or folks who brought interestings?

If Bo3 takes too long then having decklists shared before the Bo1 would be a good way to try and at least gameplan around it. Knowing what your answers are and the answers to the opponent's answers can help mitigate that "this game's over turn 2" feeling if you don't know to dig for a specific answer like Ixion was for me in my store qualifier against 7 cost WoL.

Regarding the unboxing, it is definitely a niche crowd. Over the last month, for a research project, I was collecting as many cards from the Highlander TCG as I could. I won't go in to the research, but a key component was getting as many of these cards as I could. As such, I spent this last month opening, conservatively, 6-8 boxes, brand new, with about 50-50 booster pack boxes and starter deck boxes. EACH TIME I opened something, I had a little thrill that I'd get something new and neat, but I had a definite vested interest in seeing what the cards were. I'll admit, the last two boxes I bought, I was worried about storage and repeats, so it became more "dear Lord, how many more copies do I have of this?" as opposed to "I hope there's something cool coming," but that's a unique situation. I think if you do an unboxing with a "hunt" in mind, like you're looking for or hoping for something specific; that would be a lot more fun to watch as opposed to "here's another 13 that go to the fire."

I wanna see anti meta become meta, because seeing someone running WOL is just boring.

I actually dislike this mechanic a ton, and i havent really played it. I just hate the idea of a side deck to cast anytime. I definitely would have preferred the LB mechanic be almost like an evolution from Pokemon. An upgraded version of a card already on the field. You still have to draw, or search it. The side deck just seens unfun to me.

Agreed about number of rounds. I never understood why it’s just a 1 round game. It should absolutely be best 2 of 3, especially when games are just getting faster and faster. I hope SE changes this.

Comparing Lorcana and FFTCG is kind of apples to oranges isn't it? SWU and Lorcana are closer in game design. And IMO SWU is better. Not stuck in top deck mode like Lorcana games can devolve into. IMO of course.

FF isn’t terrible atm. we haven’t reached complete BS level. Knights is crazy i will admit and the deck plays basically like a yugioh deck. I don’t mind this but the only way to balance the game properly is to either ban ramza or gawain, or make backups meet the power creep of the forwards… which means that we will need backups that are free to play. also although absolutely love amatersu, most games actually are settled over when that card is played. Problem with knights is that there is no built in downside. No haste dosnt really feel bad when you can pop a forward and deal a point of damage with Ramza. My wish is for a 9k board wipe summon for 6cp, ban ramza or bring back sophie.

Day one player here and I don't like what the game is doing now. Just like you I like backups ans I love the beginning of the game when we were running after our five backups. I build a Knights deck after I saw Curilla with 16 backups... When I found out that people was running only 8 and just dump they hand to play 4 or 5 fowards, I was so disapointed. I feel like building and strategy are gone. You just have to play fowards that can play forwards and attack. Game is to fast for me and I miss the "fair game". It's hard for me to find player with the same philosophy of game, so I think I have no choice and quit the game. People don't want to play backup. They throw half the game right in the trash. What the point of printing backup... It's sad...

Given the current pace of the game for FFTCG, it might be time for some serious discussion about best of 3. I remember the Reraise event a couple years ago (has it really been that long?) was a 2 deck best of 3 even in Swiss rounds; that ran smoothly enough and decks were not able to end games anywhere near the same speed as some do now. You might sometimes get control vs control matchups that end up going to time here and there, and there's the potential for the meta of future sets to shift towards something much slower, but regardless: best of 3 events for FFTCG have worked in the past so it's not much of a problem either way.

I've been there, for instance, back during the Avalanche days when I was trying to do Onion Knight tricks. This is just a game where bringing the wrong deck can ruin the whole experience, and you have to be willing to bend the knee to the meta I guess. I think free forward spam has always been bullshit, and is worsening the game, but this set I was finally able to build something original and anti-meta that worked, and it's the most enjoyment I've had with FF in a couple years. It's not the #1 deck I wanted to main, but there's some balance between it being "mine" and still having the crushing power needed to be a real deck these days.

I came from mtg so i am used to like 8 hour prereleases or day long tournaments. Whenever i suggested best of 3 my group would just say no cause events would be to long but isnt that the point? If im driving 1-2 hours for an event i want to play in that event not just get blown out or blow someone else out in 2 turns. Best of 1 is just dumb and lazy and makes as nuch sense as dual losses for going to time. I understand the frustration.

A few things on my mind: -i think comparing a game early in development vs a game in late development isn't always fair for a lot of reasons -there will always be good and bad matchups, a lot of this can be prepared for before playing any games at all with card/deck selection. not all decks can answer all scenarios -fftcg as a game has evolved, as every game does. it is a choice to adapt with it, or not. who knows if the deck you are playing now will be viable in a few sets from now in lorcana, especially if there isn't additional support -sometimes aggro is king. sometimes control is king. sometimes midrange is king. all of this is determined by many factors and what cards are available. newer cards generally push something to be better. also with this mindset, archtypes/elements are sometimes purposely unbalanced, one element may be weak for 3 of 4 sets only to be the strongest for the next 3 or 4. this gives the ability for elements to leap over each other and increase diversity and gameplay experience -forcing an older archtype that could be dated in any game could lead to the same experiences you are having now. if someone played samurais or monks for example, they havent recieved much support. could they win? sure, so can ff6, but i think certain decks are the best for a reason, and it's not because its the favorite to play I can understand how this seems frustrating, but the "less time spent playing than traveling" comment can be applied to several games and scenarios, especially if poor variance in the mix. I think this is a toxic thought process. Would you be thinking this if you won instead of lost? If you want more games, nothing is stopping you from playing more games. You seen my deck at KC MC first hand, and seen how fast it could win. Not all games were fast, and a handful of my opponents did ask for another game, and we did play again. I think its up to the individual whether they have a well spent time or not. Hope things go smoother from here on, card games are meant to be enjoyed!

I feel you. But maybe on a different way. I myself am guilty of playing ice as in monoice aggro, don corneo dredge and ice/lightning which is my favorite. But I see aggro as a one way to ask if your opponent has that shinryu or maybe exdeath or ixion or anything that can fight back at these aggros' ideology. If you have the answer:you win, if not: you lose. Thus the problem is you have to be ready to answer aggro players in whatever combination you have and draw that answer. In final fantasy you can fine-tune your deck pretty well to the certain point so most likely you can take on anything with anything. Mostly with effort and understanding of the meta. If you think I'm wrong, that's fine. I'm thinking of a fan of card games and FF series so I may be last one keeping up the hope. But I am not happy with the pace game's evolution so even fans have their limits. So yeah I think it's more lack of variety that sucks and LB deck is not helping for some elements at all. Maybe we can get more good cards like Cloud in the future(I wonder what is his next "job"). It sounds like it's gone nearly as bad as YGH went. If your game can be memed as a "King of Games Kept Exodia" game, maybe it's not you. :P

48:55 Bruh I feel this in my soul. When light Lightning came out and XIII was huge, I had a moment just like this. I was big into earth-lighting at the time so my answer to XIII was 3 ixion. I go second and my opponent opens light Lightning and swings. First damage is Ixion. I do my turn and pass knowing I'm gonna eat some damage, but had a way to search Ixion next turn.... Next 2 damage are my other 2 Ixion.... I immediately scooped and had to hold myself back from flipping the table lol.

I agree with the abilities, recently there was interview with kageyama about he plays each game before making cards for them but there's plenty of cards where the ability doesn't.match the character whatsoever, like Fran being the one that plays cat 12 characters for free makes no sense to me as someone who has ff12 as their favorite game, vaan or Ashe should've had that effect

Yeah the issue for me is the continued value, you mentioned curellia, she has an entry but then also protects all your knights after. Nacht after he plays the stuff is just done.

Honestly, with all of the big engine forwards that are overtuned now like Giga Wol, Curilla, and Rug, it is nice to see a more balanced package. It has great threat potential, but you have to be caution if your usage or you burn out. It also thins the deck out well, so you have another strategy that you want to make more consistent, this works there. Best archetype I found is with Ranperre atm. Package takes too many cards for summon heavy builds with MiB and Ranperre gives you options additional options to get full value from Alba/Diana.
