Why tarnish Robert Dunsmuir without presenting any evidence? Wellington Cemetery and Mount Benson School sit on land he donated to the community, just like the Harewood stuff via VCML. Robert was voted in as MLA for the Nanaimo district, twice in a row, and at his funeral procession in 1889, attended by 12000 when the population of Victoria was but 16000, the hearse was led by a large group of Wellington miners and E&N employees.

I remember many of those building s and I wish they built homes that looked like that now. I much prefer them to the appearance of the current homes.

Wow, exactly what it used to look like. One of the first McDonalds on the island I worked at, I was 16. Watching the ferries from the top grandstand at Grandview Bowl, headed out to Vancouver. Vics Foodliner, Jack Harris Chev, S Madill, schools we went to. Living near Nanaimo Golf Course on Wedge Pl. Meeting my girlfriend now wife of 45 years at the diner at Country Club Mall. The drive in movie theatre you can see in the distance. NDSS, Nanaimo Shipyard and the massive amount of properties that haven't been built on yet. The fuel tankers that blew up on the waterfront. This film does move pretty fast and just when you think you've figured something out it changes. It's pretty cool anyways.

This cemetery is really close to my parents house where I grew up. I used to go walk over to visit all the time. My family has lived in what used to be "Wellington" for the past 25 years.

Amazing footage, brings back many memories of being at Green Mtn. with, Barb, and the Peetz clan, Bud, Judy, my dad Ivan. The old skis and clothing were something.

Wow , I've been waiting a long time for this , would be in a line up behind the dozer as it plowed the way up to the lodge, I bet it would have gone by the wayside with the now current weather , even if there was no marmots up there. Thank you Ms Davies.

Thank you very much for the wonderful images you have given us. I am born and raised in Nanaimo and am now 70 years old. Still living in the 'old city' area and still loving it. These are the images of my youth and I remember them all very well. They bring back such great memories. Thank you again for your ongoing work and efforts.

Oh My God... That is So Beautiful... ❤❤❤ That was My Grandparents Home, Peter and Ivy Scott. Grama sold it in 1970 (if memory serves me) and I have many fond memories of Grampa and Gramas home. My Grampa, hand dug the basement, as there was none, when they bought it. He would crawl under the house, every night after supper, and dig and drag the dirt out, until he finally had the basement dug out. The last time I was in Nanaimo, I went by to see the house, and was horrified to see it looking like a Crack-Shack... I was sick to my Stomach, to see it in that condition. Grampa and Grama always kept it looking so beautiful. Thank You So Much, for making it Beautiful Again... ❤❤❤ Allan Lundquist

Thank you for publishing these photos. If I may offer a comment, a non-animated slide show is far preferable to this distracting zooming in and out; and captions on all photos would be most helpful!

It is so nice to see the recognition you have received for the great work and effort you put into the Nanaimo Archives !!!!! I am a Nanaimo born and raised man, at 70 years of age I still live near the neighbourhood I was born an grew up in. I subscribe to the Nanaimo Archives website and always look forward to new and interesting content about our town. Nanaimo is a great town, warts and all ... lol. We are blessed to live here on the island in such a wonderful location and environment with such interesting history. I thank you for making so much of that history available to us. Thank you again, and congratulations !!!!!

Fantastic !!!!! It is so nice to see folks who still value the lifestyle of days gone by and are willing to renovate and renew older homes in the 'Old City'. I am 70 years old and was born and raised in the Old City and still live in the area. I will never live any where else. Kudos to you Ms. Bajan, I wonder if you are related to Marco Bajan who owned and developed property in the old city. One of the first rentals I had as a young man was owned my Marco. Probably around 1973 ???? Thanks again for preserving our City.
