I didn’t see the big turntable beside the cabin ruins on the East side of the canyon. But, I did notice that part of the mountain was taken down by a rock slide, so it’s probably buried down the hill in the rocks and debris. It was a large wood laminated wheel with a huge hand brake built onto it where the cable from the West side wrapped around it a few times and then was threaded through some large iron “guides” to help direct the cable to the canyon floor. When I was up there the wheel still turned and the large lever of the hand brake would still move and function as it was intended to for the years that it was in operation. There was also an engine block from an old Model A or Model T truck mounted to a skid that was near one of the mine entrances. This apparently operated a compressor or maybe a fresh air system that was used in the mine, it would have been too small to have been helpful for much else. I can’t remember what year it may have been when I was up there with Myron, but it was pretty awesome the design and engineering that went into the cable system.

So where is the difficult part everyone keeps mentioning? We were there in June, and have a 4Runner TRD OR, and did the alpine loop (lake city to cinnamon, to animas fork ghost town and engineer back to lake city) with no issues. We wanted to do Bristol Head, but were told by several people that the 4Runner wouldn’t make it, so we didn’t try. But watching your video, I don’t see anything that shows any difficulty.
@ShaunOfAllTradesАй бұрын
The only "difficult" part would be the section that starts around the 32 minute mark in the video. Now, I will say that we did this ride right after some work had been done. Typically, there are huge boulders in the trail that are easy to get hung up on. That being said, I've seen stock Ford F-150s make it up to the top. It's just very rough in a full size vehicle. It even shakes the crap out of me while riding a 4wheeler. I have another video on my channel where I talk about the trail a bit more and show drone footage at the top. This one is just the raw, unedited action cam footage.

Got a suggestion for your atv. We have been taking sport atvs up to Colorado since the 80,s and we found that if take the top off the air cooler under the seat it allows enough air to get through and waalah you have plenty of power. Yours sounds strong anyway. You guys need to try Rat Creek Trail next time your in Creed. Thanx Fer Sharin
@ShaunOfAllTrades6 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I actually removed the air box lid on our ride the day after this one because we were going up higher in altitude. My family has been going to Creede since the late 60s/early 70s, but we didn’t start bringing ATVs until the early to mid 80s. My dad, sister and brother all had Honda ATC sport 3-wheelers that we rode out there in the late 80s through the early 2000s. Made the switch to 4-wheelers in 2006. 😊 Rat Creek trail is a fun one. Been on it many times! I rode a Honda 50cc dirt bike on that one when I was 6 years old. Fun times!

Colorado is not a state to offroad at speed. the rocks will kill you
@ShaunOfAllTrades7 ай бұрын
Yeah...unfortunately when riding sport quads with a manual clutch and transmission, you have to keep the RPMs up to keep it running but also have to keep the speed up so that it doesn't overheat. Need that natural air flow to pass through.

Fun fact. That mill was built in Silverton, then disassembled and all the pieces were marked with those numbers and letters to help with putting it back together. Then hauled up the mountain with mules and rebuilt. I can’t wait to head up there this summer but it’s going to be a loooong time before all that snow melts. We got hammered this winter. Green here in New Mexico though lol

You made that look entirely too easy. The last time I drove up to Carson, it was physically impossible without four wheel drive and low range due to a couple of near vertical rocky hills. There were more of the buildings standing, too, but it is a great little morning (or afternoon) trip out of Lake City. There were also a few structures still standing in the upper town, but that was not as easy to access.
