Been here many times and it is really a great place to visit. You will be here all day as there is so much to see. Bring water and a lunch. They have a picnic area under a grove of oak trees.

I grew up in Mar Vista which was a couple miles away and remember driving by this beautiful building with my father on Venice Blvd on our way to a Dodgers game. My father was not a fan of the freeway so we took Venice to Figueroa to Sunset to what is now Vin Scully Way. In addition to Helms, there were so many old classic buildings to see on our way to the game. They are probably gone now 😢. Thank you for sharing.❤

Pat, this is the first time for me commenting even though I followed you on here for quite a while... Like you I have spent a long-ime in HOLLYWOOD but now retired, had various jobs for all the studios including having been a studio historian for MCA-Universal City Studios and later 20th Century-Fox. My uncle was asst. manager at MGM British, and I'm British but came out here in 1976, and my daughter is third generation and works at Disney... When UI first came out here I lived in Burbank, and I knew the name well before Rowan & Martin's "beautiful downtown" iconic line... I knew it from watching the old Warner Bros. TV shows I saw in the late 1950's on British TV. You are a natural for these informative trips down memory lane that really highlight whats made California so iconic. Your variety of topics keeps us all coming back for sure, and your infectous energy and interest gets us all thinking. I used to give very special HOLLYWOOD VIP tours on weekends years ago, tours that were not the usual "take-you-for-a-ride kind, but to location sights and movie ranches. Today's CGI/AI HOLLYWOOD is totally different to both of us, as we came in at the tail-end of the old Studio System, and Disney was Walt Disney Productions and the old-timers were still running their own departments! Anyway, I live just 15-minutes away from Bob's Big Boy, so we just have to get together if you feel so inclined. So, keep up the good work and I wish you and your family a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I grew up in Riverside in the 50's and early 60's and when the Helms truck came down our street my mom, my sister and I would be out there waiting. Always got pretty much the same things: jelly doughnuts and glazed doughnuts. I've never found any to equal those by Helms. I thought every kid knew about Helms until I met people later in life from any place outside of southern California. They had no idea what I was talking about. That's when I realized Helms was our own southern California company.

I get up on Helms Bakery goods. It was the highlight of our day. All the neighborhood kids looked forward to that truck with its family whistle coming down the street. Does anyone remember the "Bridge Cookies" one of my moms favorites. The donuts were to die for and the bread was always fresh and delicious. Yeah, I did the school field trip thing too! Thank you for preserving such a wonderful place that brought tasty memories to so many ❤❤❤😊😊😊

The Rifleman had a lot of the same folks and others like Dennis Hopper, Sammy Davis Jr., and Mako. Funny thing was The Rifleman portrayed Chinese, Japanese and Blacks as heroic, tough and intelligent. It ran from 1958-1963 and I remember lynchings in that time period when I was a kid.

They used to make cookies that were like today's Milano Wafers. I used to fake being sick to stay home when the Helm's truck came so I could get a box on the house tab. We did a tour of the bakery in like 3rd or 4th grade, it was pretty cool. My grandfather was a baker that used to supply all the roach coaches in South Bay with pastries.

The enemy attacked two sea-borne oil tankers, farther up the coast from Goleta, days later. One of which was sunk. At a different date, which excapes me, there was a trio of enemy subs, on the surface in a remote cove in the NW of Catalina, which was spotted by a patrol in a speedboat, not the kind of which that could attack. Apparently, no radio, so by the time they got back to Hamilton or Avalon, and search planes and surface ships could be dispatched, the subs had disappeared.

OMG! I loved Van de Kamp's. Raspberry tarts and mini pecan pies. Used to go to the Hughes, on Sunset in the Palisades, after school. Get the three-pack of pecan pies and a gigantic 16 oz glass bottle of Coke. Those windmills were everywhere, in supermarkets and free-standing restaurants.
