She never needed another person there she could hold the audience all by herself which is why her monologues with alan benett and the ones she did as Kitty on the Victoria Wood show were so amazing. And ofcourse she got to do mini monologues with Hyacinth and her phone conversations.

It's one of the most horrific moments of our lives, as human beings, to realize just how much we erase people we have no place for, and no answers for. To realize that people are simply expected to rot and die silently in a corner, so their diseases don't affect the living. To realize this is the default human experience, and only a select lucky few of us get to be loved until the end. I don't think most people realize it until they're the ones being erased.

Wow. Made me tear up a bit this freezing winter morning. My mum used to say we'd only know she'd died by all the blowflies on the window. (she was wrong about that), it made me think of her, she was so similar in personality, thought she was royalty really..... But in the end people, even nurses, stayed away, because she had nothing nice to say about anyone. RIP mum.

Patricia Routledge makes modern actors seem somewhat inadequate. Such talent is rare. The writer Alan Bennet is also a true master of his craft.

Patricia Routhledge the best ever. she is so delicate and subtle in her expressions. i don't think any other actress could have pulled that off on such a high level. i really love to watch her, she also resembles my grandmother or my grandmother her, in temper and even looks, particular in her hairstyle. and of course, it also must be mentioned, that play is a great piece of observation and insight, great work by Bennett.

Sleep studies have indicated that sheepskin/wool products can have a significant improvement on sleep quality. So I'm guessing the lady in question is wearing the jacket for the same soothing effect as when sleeping in sheepskin? She does only encounter this lady at her place of employment, right? She might have a full-on wooly bed at home too! :D

It feels very sad and lonely being this lady. Quite claustrophobic. But I cannot agree with a comment I read here calling her a narcissist psychopat. She does not ignore people, walk over them...She is just incapable of reaching out. Unless it is in very tiny, safe ways. Through rituals. She is a great observer, humour is her weapon. It is through humour, actually, that she connects. "We laughed!!!". It is not only - because Me, myself and I! managed to make a great joke, there is a moment of sharing that she enjoys, too. Pride as well, but not only. Very deep down she is a gentle soul...we discover...as the story unveils. A shy one. An anxious one. Lost. Very, very closed. Do not talk about yourself!That is the first thing I learned....Who/ what taught her that? And then there is the fly. Some mentioned here. A symbol of death approaching. It is that of course, but not only that. There is also a touch of comfort, joy, hope. The fly is a little friend. She is not completely alone. Children can feel this, this sense of connection to the Whole. Also: She singled me out! .... So maybe... in the end.... there really IS something, someone, who cares for me..:-) PATRICIA ROUTLEDGE BRILLIANT as usual:-)

@adamgregory5274 Жыл бұрын
What gets me about this is how Miss Schofield's catch phrase, " We Laughed" gets more and more sporadic as the piece moves to its conclusion. Bennett is a genius and his economy of words is masterful, both hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. Alan Bennett hails from Leeds ( as do I) and how he has distilled the speech mannerisms of these northern women of a certain age ( women I grew up listening to) , right down to the semi mouthing of the word Bowel is brilliant When an actor hitscthe public consciousness with one particular role that catapults them to greater fame such as Patricia Routledge's comedy masterclass portrayal of Hyacinth (Bucket) Bouquet, people forget the body of work behind them (See Miriam Margloyes re Harry Potter). Routledge has appeared on Broadway, worked with Leonard Bernstein, sung opera and appeared in screen in many gems throughout her glittering carreer. Check out her collaborations with Victoria Wood and the other work she has done with Bennett, it's rich pickings.

When Routledge does her thing seriously, there’s pretty much nobody better. She’s an excellent actress. I made the mistake of thinking that her work in later sitcoms was “her”… I so underestimated her talent. As much as I enjoyed her series work, she is SO much more than Hetty Wainthropp and Hyacinth Bucket. 💕
