Craig, have you noticed that the audio meter is not very accurate while using Mic Mini? Usually when I connect another microphone or audio interface, the clipping happens when the meter reaches the end of the red zone and the yellow zone defaults to range between -18dB and -6dB. I have noticed that after disabling (very useful!) limitter (Clipping Control) clipping happens right after entering the yellow zone. I have tested it on Action 4 with all recent software updates.
@iancraig
@iancraig 3 сағат бұрын
I haven’t found it to be much of a problem tbh. I think it’s tempting to get the audio as high as possible on the meter, but actually, it doesn’t harm to back it off a bit and raise in post. The background noise around you is exactly the same volume whatever gain you set. The mic self noise is smothered by background sounds in most cases in any case. But you are right….. the meter isn’t that great. However, I find that my camera is reading audio higher than what I see in post. Try turning down until yellow just flashes on peaks and don’t aim for close to red!

I have always found that lavaliers and mini mics like this work better in open space although they’re supposed to be ‘tuned’ to sound good up against your body. Wearing them is convenient, but holding them slightly away gives a more robust sound.

Thanks Fish. It’s a nice little mic. Not studio quality but super for vlogging and planting in the scene. I have a full set coming tomorrow for my other cameras because I really like the simplicity and speed of set up and connection. Also, just sticking it under the camera facing forwards or backwards. The NC is better with long drawn out sounds I think. Suddenly noises get through. The low NC is more subtle and doesn’t hit the voice too hard.

@iancraig Thank you for telling me that. I have been using my phone to record video for many years for running videos and a lot of outdoor filming and always the problem is the wind and on a phone it's very hard to try to cover the microphones. That little wireless microphone seems like it'd be a perfect solution. The reason I like to use my phone is cuz I always have it with me and I don't have to have two different devices to film with in the Google pixel phones and some of the other phones out there do really good video. Do you think the action cameras video is comparable to the video from a flagship smartphone?
@iancraig
@iancraig 17 сағат бұрын
I’m not sure John. Flagship smartphones like IPhones take excellent video. Any USB C mic would go straight into an Android phone so you would get better audio. Even better if you could find a right angled connector with a mic. I sometimes use an Edutige mic with a right angle connector but it’s a 3.5mm plug. If there is a usb one, then you’d be in business. The Edutige is unbelievably good. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IP0ST78/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Right angled connector like this … www.amazon.co.uk/MOSWAG-Headphone-Adapter-Compatible-Samsung-Brown/dp/B0C7QVPXHJ/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1GEGKEV85VQ39&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.TN40-KjaiOrQVfFqyn6DmEbxnu1M2ILlI4ILIzUxTHzBMgdavQz0fQDZvHCQmDX2KRExRuT9IepEH-0_HcIuLGe2Vm6MiBdxNjFnYnoZWI-cbIgzKqd6RowOI3w8yew9na2A-IwrHFQvTVhW0XIylW-uLoREc8OiI-dorTaysdZsrlsbPJ7E45eCfhro2IBjl0Bb64p2KZryIGy6inTRSTEv_wh-SXytlidxHYkOfAUXq5_5htKYQyQ0nJKn-XWuJIiGqdlMUKGfATQHmHJltvZP2lcVtSGTXG3u0DWJEPk.rOUhzKfVWSel5jyDkh0ef21-cjhn0liNnUD5Ddx9JO4&dib_tag=se&keywords=Right+angled+3.5+to+usb+c&nsdOptOutParam=true&qid=1732913903&sprefix=right+angled+3.5+to+usb+c%2Caps%2C89&sr=8-6 I bought a deadcat for it and a right angled connector. Excellent sound. The DJI Wireless Mic Mini comes with a usb c connector for the receiver but that means you would have the receiver hanging off the bottom of the phone on a plug. The receiver then picks up the mic and sends it to the phone. The right angled connector with Edutige would be much smaller.

Thank you. Yes, it seems that wireless mics really are shrinking. I do find with all lavaliers and wireless that the sound is very different when you get them away from your body. Thanks for the video and info, sounds great! curious if you can help me understand how the Action 5 receives audio input through USB-C. In your specific setup after plugging in the preamp, are you getting audio into the Action 5 through the DJI 3.5mm adapter? Or is the preamp connecting directly into the camera via USB-C? What preamp are you using on your dynamic mic? I have a Shure MV88+ usb-C mic and I am struggling to get the camera to recognize the device. Any idea if it is possible to plug in a USB-C audio interface into the Action 5?
@iancraig
@iancraig 16 күн бұрын
Yes, you can go direct in via usb C. For my dynamic mic and the shotgun, I had the camera plugged into the DJI battery handle. That has a 3.5mm socket and the handle is plugged into the USB C on the camera. So in effect, I am using the USB connection for this audio, until I go behind the camera where I switched to the internal mics.

Did the mist filter reduce or fix the trumpet flare?
@iancraig
@iancraig 18 күн бұрын
I’m not certain. The ‘trumpet’ forms in very bright sunlight. I tried to encourage it by moving around the sun but couldn’t get it although there were some flecks going on. I noticed that the filter did change the flare pattern and I ‘think’ might have reduced it. I suspect the DJI cover has no coatings but the black mist filter does. I’m waiting for really bright sun. On a large screen, I think it does improve in ‘look’ with the filter, but I am used to using them with my larger cameras, so I may be more attuned to the look. I can imagine action cam enthusiasts might not like it because it lowers the contrast and blooms highlights.
@ArcticExploring
@ArcticExploring 18 күн бұрын
@@iancraig For me the mist filter did look like it actually improved the overall quality and making it more cinematic. Not a fan of mist filters, but I did actully order CPL filter after watching your video, and it was cheapest for me to order it directly from K&C Norwegian site and got free shipping. It were more than double price from Amazon in UK.
@iancraig
@iancraig 18 күн бұрын
I think it’s just what you get accustomed to. I noticed a long way back how many action cam users raised the contrast in an effort to make everything ‘pop’ and look sharper. Trouble is that doing this can work against the ‘action’ because images become so sharp looking that movement starts to show jitters. I’ve used Glimmer Glass and Black Mist filters for a long time on my larger cameras. Also a ‘Smoque’ filter and Glimmerglass, so to me, action cam footage can look hard and digital. But I think if you’re more accustomed to that digital look, then Mist filters can look dull. A CPL will concentrate colours more. I really like them on green leaves because they cut reflections. With such a wide angle, they can mess up skies though because it goes patchy because of the way wide angle lenses work. With a Black Mist filter, I feel that I can capture some more ‘filmic’ footage now and it’ll match better with my Canon and Sony cameras. It really shows on a large viewing screen.
@ArcticExploring
@ArcticExploring 18 күн бұрын
@@iancraig You are right about CPL filters will make the sky have different brightness since it is so wide and this I have seen with my dslr before. But I do like CPL filters when used right to make colors pop and take of the shining of water surfaces. Interesting with the mist filter, will probably get one but not for my action cameras since I am going for the crisp/sharp footage when driving since sharpness tend to blur with fast moving objects from what I already have seen now. But for slow paste like vlogging it will make the footage more professional I will think.

On the day of embarkation, P&O will have previously contacted you with a time to arrive at the terminal. So you may well have a whole day to spend in Southampton, so we spent it as part of our holiday and visited the shopping centre, West Quay which wasn't far from the Holiday Inn where we were staying. Holiday Inn offered to store our suitcases in a room for us so that we were free to roam around Southampton which actually, is a lovely port. The shopping Centre is enormous and gets very busy on a Saturday but is a nice day out and outside, there are lots of restaurants to eat in. After spending a day there, we went back to the Holiday Inn to collect our suitcases and were going to walk to the terminal but it was raining so we got a taxi. Holiday Inn allowed us to book from their reception. Getting on board was like lightening. we were onboard Iona before we knew it. I follow a KZbin channel called 'Solent Ships'. An excellent site where 'The Captain' makes lots of chat and banter while watching cruise ships depart. So we took a Union Jack flag with us, fully knowing that 'The Captain' would find us and focus on us to allow our daughter, Lucy watch us leaving the UK live on his KZbin channel. 'The Captain' did us proud and I included some clips taken from my TV in this video for my video. He's a lovely commentator and actively searches for passengers to highlight so that they can have one last connection with their family before they leave. My wife was on the phone to Lucy, so we knew that 'The Captain' had found us, which Lucy actually found very emotional .... to see her parents sailing away into the sunset!!
