Afonja was a Yoruba man. He needed to fight a war with Oyo king, so he invited Alimi (a Fulani visitor to Ilorin) to assist him. With Alimi's help, Afonja won the war. Afterward, Afonja welcomed Alimi to remain permanently in Ilorin. Before long, Alimi's men started harassing Yoruba people, raping women, stealing, etc. Afonja started to caution Alimi to call his men to order. But Alimi refused to listen. Instead, Alimi plotted a coup, and killed Afonja. That was how Fulani took over Ilorin, and they started having Emir in Ilorin, instead of crown kings. Of course, they imposed the Fulani culture on the Ilorin Yorubas. Also, because the leadership is Fulani muslims, they believe they are superior to the other Yoruba muslims in the S.W. region.

The current emir of kano's mother is a princess from Ilorin Emirates. Kwarans are Yorubas with strong relationship with Hausa/Fulani. I am Hausa and I love Kwarans.
