I always find those unfortunate rats, either the husky’s get them before I know they are there, the cats have 0 issues with big rats. And even one time my tegu grabbed one under my shed I didn’t know about. No need for traps my pets get them before they become a problem and before I even know they are there. Last night I let the dogs out for a toilet and they pinned a giant rat in my back box for a mower. I just sent him on his way next door 😂😂

Depends on the birds for the specific height, i.e. smaller birds may have a harder time reaching a higher perch, while equally taller birds need enough head room. The most important consideration is that it is higher than the nesting box

hi I bought the rentokil rodine rat and mouse killer grain bait. Well my husband did. we thought it had everything with it. now we see it needs a bait station Well it was 11pm by the time he got back from work and well we used a container to put the grain packet in and left all night. IT ALSO SAID ON THE PACKET: DO NOT OPEN THE SACHETS CONTAINING THE BAIT. but then how will the rat get to the bait in the little bag? The rat had not touched the bait all night although we saw some dirt behind our cooker that we havnt cleaned in a while coming out from the side of the cooker and it wasn't like that the night before. When we moved the cooker we saw the rat run towards and behind our washing machine instead. we are still trying to catch it to kill it.
@flytesofancy17 күн бұрын
With the sachets of grain bait, the rats will easily chew the perforated bags they come in to get at the poison so they can get at it no problem. My personal practise, based on MY poultry keeping experience, is to empty the sachet of grain based poisons (carefully and wearing gloves) into the tray of the bait station. This will prevent the rats removing and dragging the sachet to another location (which they easily do and I have seen) where an innocent bird or animal could be poisoned. If the grain bait is loose in the locked bait station, the only way to remove it is for the rat to eat it, which eliminates the chance of secondary location contamination. Phill

Thanks for making a note of this. I have heard there are a few different rules in the US regarding egg washing. In the UK though - if you are producing and selling eggs to the consumer - regulations are "Class A eggs shall not be washed or cleaned before or after grading" ... it does also say that producers should not store them at less than 5 deg C etc etc ... it does seem quite complex for egg producers! 🥚

What about Diatomaceous Earth?
@flytesofancyАй бұрын
Although traditionally used in feed to help prevent worms, it is not as effective at killing worm eggs in the ground or treating a chicken that already had worms. A medicated wormer works best for that
@almaramirez102 ай бұрын
Hi! Gapeworm in specific do you know what I can do.
@flytesofancy2 ай бұрын
If dealing with Gapeworm, it is important to get them treated with a medicated wormer as soon as possible. Flubenvet is our preferred worming medication however you can consult with a vet for their best recommended product

I am afraid we cannot legally advise about use of Flebendazole or Flubenvet as it is a licensed product - but your Vet can. We can only say what we would do ourselves, so we would probably ask the Vet for the higher percentage option as we found the 1% product to be less effective for Gapeworm. Anne

Hey, my flock of chickens has 6 chickens in it. 3 out of the 6 chickens are getting beaten up pretty badly. The other 3 look fine. We don't really know what to do about it or why they are doing this. Any input could be very helpful.
@flytesofancy2 ай бұрын
Hi, my first question is, how long have you had the birds? Are the 3 that are being beaten up a new addition? Or, if they have been together for a while, has this just started happening? Do they have enough space and perhaps refuges to escape bullying? Initial thoughts would be to separate them, but keep each 3 within sight for say a week or so. We have a longer video about feather pecking here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4TEnmeHrLqobrs. Phill
@Knifegirl162 ай бұрын
@@flytesofancy We have had our chickens for around a year and a half now. They have all been in the same flock together since they were chicks. This just started happening the past few months. It wasn't too bad until two of my chickens only had like 5 tail feathers. Now, both of them have none and my 3rd chicken that gets beaten up is bare pink in a lot of spots. It is getting bad and closer to winter when they need their feathers. We don't have too much space in our run for them to escape the other bullies, but we have roosts out there that they just sit on most of the time. Sometimes when we throw some scratch grain or meal worms in there, the bullied ones won't even come down to eat the treats because they are afraid of getting beaten up and chased away by the bullies.
@flytesofancy2 ай бұрын
I think, from what you say, you are going to have to separate the bullied 3 from the others if you area ble to. Sounds like space might be an issue so if you can extend their run in some way as the more space you can give them the better. Did you watch the video link? You need to find a way to break the habit, and especially make sure the pecking isnt so bad that it creates wounds as that will draw the others in even more. Other than that you would have to try an anti pecking spray or the areas without feathers. This should, or might, repel the aggressors to break the habit.

Oh my laying hen got it in both legs and they are slightly swollen but no pus just blood what can i do?
@flytesofancy3 ай бұрын
If its a swelling under the foot, which would be the abscess (not on the legs), the best action is to apply an antiseptic spray and bandage it if possible. This will help kill the bacteria causing the bumblefoot. Repeat evey few days. If its bleeding under the foot, or if the legs are swollen and bleeding, then would suggest a Vet needs to look at it to see if its something else there.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a natural, non-toxic powder made from the fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms called diatoms. It has various uses, including pest control, and it can be beneficial in managing lice and other external parasites in chickens. Here’s how it works: ### 1. **Mechanism of Action:** - **Physical Abrasion:** DE is composed of sharp, microscopic particles that can puncture the protective exoskeleton of insects, including lice. This leads to dehydration and ultimately death of the pests. - **Desiccation:** When lice come into contact with diatomaceous earth, the powder absorbs moisture from their bodies, leading to desiccation and mortality. ### 2. **Application:** - **Dust Bath:** Chickens naturally take dust baths, and adding diatomaceous earth to their bath can allow them to coat themselves with it, helping with pest control. - **Direct Application:** DE can be lightly dusted directly onto the chickens’ feathers and skin, particularly around areas prone to lice infestation. ### 3. **Safety:** - Diatomaceous earth is generally safe for chickens and humans when food-grade DE is used. It is free from harmful chemicals and poses minimal risk when handled correctly. ### 4. **Considerations:** - Ensure the environment is well-ventilated when applying DE, as the dust can be irritating to lungs if inhaled in large quantities. - Regular monitoring and applications may be necessary to effectively manage lice infestations. ### 5. **Complementary Measures:** - While DE can be effective, it should be part of a broader pest management strategy that includes regular coop cleaning, monitoring, and maintaining good overall chicken health. Using diatomaceous earth can be a natural, effective way to help control lice in chickens, but it’s important to combine this method with good management practices for optimal results.
