Solomon was not a slave to the blessing the Lord gave him. He was not forced to always make the wisest decision though he may have often known what it would be. I think this is an interesting retelling in the Bible because it proves to us that foolishness or lack of wisdom is not to blame for our depraved moral state. Even the wisest man to ever live was immoral and even ungodly at times. The issue is the desires of our hearts. Humans *want* the wrong things. Wise, knowing better or not, we have defective wicked hearts that thirst for things which displease God. Being more intelligent, more wealthy, wiser, more exposed or experienced or anything else will never solve it. The rich, the poor, the fool, and the scholar can only have hope in God changing their hearts.
