we did a lot of damage to our city back in the 50s-00s which left us with a shell of a city today, destroying so much of our history. i wish we could go back to the 1920s when portland was just a drunk town

I'd buy a DVD copy of this if there is one available. We lived up there at the time and left not long afterwards.

Excellent. The film maker Manfred Kirchheimer just recently died
@grayigloo2023Ай бұрын
wonderful, but is there no way to improve the clarity/definition? the art is so deserving!
@calebenglerАй бұрын
This film was made by Manfred Kirchheimer - (1931 - July 16, 2024) The graffiti artists featured are Lee, The Fabulous 5, Shadow, Daze, Kase, Butch, Blade, Slave, 12 T2B, Ree, and Pusher. Kirchheimer wanted to "elevate" their work as suggested in the title. He told NPR that he would drive to the Bronx and film the trains going overhead: They would come by and it would be screaming full of colors - just gorgeous ... The smart thing I did was shoot it all outdoors. Most of the lines are indoors, and the way most people see these paintings was indoors. Doing it outdoors gave a whole other perspective. Stations of the Elevated debuted in 1981 at the New York Film Festival. When it was first released, it received no reviews and was essentially forgotten after its premier at the New York Film Festival.

They built that in FOUR YEARS?!? These days for a project like that after four years the court battles and approvals wouldn't even be finished. That's NOT progress. There is a section of the Turnpike near Breezewood that was abandoned in the 60's when the two tunnels were bypassed. It's a fascinating place to visit and it's shocking how narrow and close together the sides of the highway are compared to modern ones. (the tunnels are also REALLY dark!). There is a fascinating video from 1953 of driving though the tunnels on the Turnpike. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYCzkISlnt-WjcUsi=LWA94BFJwrafpHYJ

Never seen a silent that had zero music?
@SwiftFoxProductions11 күн бұрын
Yeah, it's not meant to have zero music. Don't know if the uploader only has a copy with the music missing or they purposely removed the music to avoid copyright. But, yeah, if seen in a proper movie theater, this movie would have definitely had music accompanying it (either played live or on a separate record).

Interrupted by incessant commercials. No musical score - this movie is for rent on Amazon Prime, so I wonder if there’s music accompaniment to that offer. Hilarious scene: the 2 males keep observing an interchange of 2 female faces🤣

Marion Davies was a better actor than given credit for. William Randolph Hearst's Cosmopolitan Productions backed the film, and "William Goodrich" (Roscoe Arbuckle) directed while in exile from in front of the camera.

Amazing how in the 1990s 'Progressive' was building light rail, parks, smart land use and vibrant cities. Now 'Progressive' means destroying all this with drugs, riots, crime, homeless and wokeness. Portland's car dependent suburbs are booming now and the city center lays in ruins.

This is kind of sad to watch when you think about how it looks now. I moved to the metro area in 2000. Even then Portland had a heartbeat like no other. I describe the Portland I remember as the intro to the show Portlandia. I miss those days. 😢
