Not keen 0n the chicken wire. The rest of it I like big time. Well done!
@JamieMCurtin2 ай бұрын
I actually agree! The plan was to keep it glass but one of the pieces broke. It came with these wire grid inserts over the glass but didn’t look right without the glass. So chicken wire painted black isn’t too overbearing when looking at it.

Hi Jamie, I am totally new to all of this and I am a complete amateur. I have a wood furniture set that I want to add some black to to kind of update it. I don't know which sections I should paint black. Do you have suggestions on which sections you pick when doing the two tone black and wood look?
@JamieMCurtin2 ай бұрын
For me it depends on each piece of furniture. Some have great details that are highlighted well with two tone. Some are more simple.

I have a cabinet almost just like this one and I want to replace the glass shelves. Did you just cut plywood to fit into the notch where the glass used to sit? I’m afraid it won’t hold without giving some support to the shelves. Did you add any to yours?
@JamieMCurtin10 ай бұрын
Yes! I used 5 mm thick plywood and glued them into the notches with wood glue. It’s maybe a hair higher than the notch but sturdy enough to hold and doesn’t bend. It holds really well and no issues.

Great job what is the brand and color used for the gray paint?
@JamieMCurtin10 ай бұрын
Cracked Pepper by Behr. If I did it again I would get the paint in matte and finish with a matte polycrylic. But still love the overall result

Absolutely LOVE this hutch! How did you attach the chicken wire to the inside? Small staples? Thanks for sharing
@JamieMCurtin10 ай бұрын
I did use staples. I am very aware that I wasn’t very descriptive in this process. I just recorded when I could. Maybe I should do a follow video and cover all of the questions and details.

Why didn’t you show how you put the wood to the back? Did you put the wood over the backing that came with the cabinet or just the wood???
@JamieMCurtin10 ай бұрын
I realize I didn’t show everything and I think I will make a video answering all details. I have kiddos and if I waited to record everything I would never finish anything.

As a furniture builder, this makes me sad.... Why would you take an EXPENSIVE hard wood and PAINT it????? The tree that that wood gree from took half a century to mature enough for use, painted furniture is made from trees that are ready in a decade, hence, their lower price. You pay more for the long developed grain, to show that grain off. 🤦♂️
@JamieMCurtin10 ай бұрын
I get that. This was a second hand piece that wasn’t getting any love at all. Probably headed to the curb. It now sits in a home and is used often and loved. Not in a land fill.

Did you spray with chalk paint?
@JamieMCurtin10 ай бұрын
I didn’t spray this one. I rolled and brushed but it was chalk paint. I don’t chalk paint or matte paint settles more evenly and when sanded between coats looks so much better.
@kathym2563 Жыл бұрын
I am wondering if I can do a makeover on furniture and not use chalk paint,,,if so what paint would I use and how would I prep stained furniture?
@JamieMCurtin Жыл бұрын
I have definitely used regular latex paint but I would recommend a flat or matte finish. This dresser I should have sanded down more, then primer, then paint and finish with a polycrylic. If it’s a stained piece and you want to paint then stripping is not necessary. But if you want to restain in a different color then stripping it before sanding could really save on sandpaper.
