I'll definitely be trying this out in my online courses with my students! It's just really nice to have various methods of creating engaging activities rather than just talking on Zoom or using the chat box. Thanks so much for sharing!

Do you think Jamboard Avatar class would work the same way too?

Would students be able to move each others text boxes? I teach middle school and can see some of them trying to be sneaky
@Cultofpedagogy

Yes, they would. This is basically a classroom management issue. One way to prevent it, or at least reduce the chances of it happening, would be to share the slideshow with student names rather than just creating a shareable link to the document. That way when students are in the slideshow, their names will appear anytime they take an action on the slide (they kind of float above their mouse action). If you share it with a link, then the "name" is just something like "anonymous meerkat." At least this way you'd see it if one student attempted to move another one's box. I hope this helps!

I love your ideas ! I'd just use another tool like Padlet (with the columns layout) or maybe Jamboard (with its sticky notes) that seems easier to use with my students.

Love this simple, easy fix to moving kids around in virtual environment. Just one thought: having kids make their own textboxes is a bit of a time suck; could also set up all the boxes yourself in advance. This is time-consuming for the teacher, true, but it may be worth it, depending on what else you've got going on.

Yes, it definitely could be a time-suck, and your solution would definitely work. You might decide to just sacrifice a little of that time for the sake of giving them experience in creating text boxes, though. I mean, they probably should learn the technology anyway, and you'd be able to see right away who needs help. Just a thought. I did a podcast recently with an online learning expert, and she advised teachers to spend the first week doing low-key stuff to give kids hands-on experience with the tech, so this may fit the bill.

Do you have similar directions for those using Powerpoint, not Google?
@Cultofpedagogy
@Cultofpedagogy 4 жыл бұрын
I chose Google Slides for this because you can share a Google Slides presentation with lots of people through a link, and they can all be in the document at the same time moving things around. If you're using regular PowerPoint offline, this wouldn't work. I believe Microsoft has a version of PowerPoint that works online the same way Google Slides does, with real-time collaboration features, but I'm not all that familiar with it. If you are, then you'd basically do this the exact same way, with text boxes.

Can students use an image instead of a text box? Maybe they'd use a picture of themselves or an image they feel represents them. Or would that many image files be too large and freeze up the file?
@Cultofpedagogy
@Cultofpedagogy 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely possible, especially with a smaller class. I'd say the only real drawback is that it could be time-consuming. Text boxes can just be created right there on the spot, whereas image uploads (not to mention the resizing, etc.) would take longer. But any kind of personalization would be an opportunity for students to get to know each other, and it could be fun, so try it with a small group and see what happens!

I love this idea! I'm going to try it out first with text boxes to get them familiar with it then try out using an image bubble that they can fill in with their face.

Spectacular! Once all students have created their avitars, I might duplicate the slide before adding each question. This would allow me to save the entire slide presentation with each of the student's answers for later reference. Thank you for spending time and energy on helping teachers find new ways to keep kids engaged and on track., and for kindling hope and a sense of empowerment in a time of great turmoil! Again, thank you!
