You can purchase "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" (TYC) through Amazon. The authors recommend four prerequisite skills a child will need before beginning TYC instruction: show interest in learning to read; be able to listen, understand, and follow simple spoken English instructions; be able to speak in complete sentences; and sustain working on a task for more than a few minutes.

1:34 Does anyone have advice on how to approach "a"? The sound aaaaaaa as she says in the video makes sense for "apple" and "at", but I'm struggling to produce the same consistent sound when saying words like "am" or "and".
@susansyverud7950Ай бұрын
Hello! The sound for "a" in the words "am" and "and" are the same as in "apple." Take a look at the video of the author teaching a word reading exercise of Lesson 13 of "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons:" kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4LWnoaoopWKgZY

So nice to see someone else say this. We just started this book and having so much trouble with "am" - I never thought I had an accent but I definitely say am much differently than apple for the A's. It's making it harder for my 5 yr old but we're both practicing together

@@susansyverud7950 thank you for responding and sharing the video. I watched it and I’m still a bit confused. I hear the “a” as in “Apple” sound during the slow sounding out, but as soon as the child speeds up the word “man” I don’t hear the “a” in the same way. The book has been really great otherwise and we’re making progress, I’m just trying to make sure I’m not confusing my student. If there are any other videos you would recommend, I’d love to educate myself.

My mother taught me how to read using that yellow book in 1998. Only a few months before I started kindergarten. I can remember it so well. Now it's come full circle for me, because here I am teaching my 5 year old just months before HE starts kindergarten! Great book. 100% Recommend

My mother was a brilliant educator. She actually used me as a guinea pig in the early 70s. I was barely out of infancy and I learned to speak and read at an outrageously early age thanks to this method. I was never a whiny child, she said. I was too busy reading, playing music and making friends! I recall that she had large text books with letters on each page. That vision is imprinted in my mind. I have a cassette tape somewhere also of one of our lessons in 1973 when I was two years old.

*Learning with this program has been a dream to use in my classroom **Childent.Study** It wholly supports my basal syllabus, but more than that, the program has even exceeded what basal offers. It is more reliable and more engaging.*

Perhaps! If your daughter is showing interest in learning to read, can attend to a task for a period of time, and can repeat a sentence to you, then she may be ready. If you decide to proceed, please ensure to have fun!

In lesson 1 in task 2 say it fast, do we show the words to the child or they just listen and then respond?
@susansyverud79502 жыл бұрын
Task 2 is a phonological awareness task, which is a spoken versus written language task. Phonological awareness lays the foundation for beginning reading. The child listens and responds without seeing any written words.

First let me send a Giant Thank You to the Authors! I bought this book in 1986 when my first daughter was 1 year old. I realized that the parent has to be willing & dedicated in using this material. I had started my children learning to read at about 1 month old by making big flashcards with everyday words. So it was not very long that my children (2 yrs.old) were reading on 3rd & 4th grade level with th the instruction given In this book. I have recommended this book to over 100 parents and again today. This book Is still the best to teach children to read! What is really Awesome, the co-author has a website that gives parents lessons, Videos and supplemental material; this makes it so much easier and motivating for the parents. I wish this existed when I started out!
