It’s wonderful to see that the traditions of probably hundreds of years are still alive and are passed on to the next generations. In case anyone thinks that this is just put on for the tourist trade, it’s absolutely not the case. Bringing the farm animals up to the high pastures once the snow has melted and the new grass is growing allows the farmers grow the crops in the more fertile land. After the harvest, in late August and into September, the animals are brought back down to the farms.

Appenzell is one of my favorite places to visit in Switzerland. Many of the buildings along the main street (where the slow procession was) are beautifully painted, like the pharmacy with pictures of medicinal plants. I’ve just happened to be there a couple of times when the procession of cows coming down from the mountains takes place in late summer, also along the main street. The cows wear the big ceremonial cow bells and are decorated with flowers, and the farmers dress in the traditional clothes of the region. The town is surrounded by rolling green hills, topped with forests, and farmhouses dotted here and there, with bigger mountains further out. It’s definitely worth a visit!
