You get a gold star for #gothlitnovember 🌟 Was so excited to tune in! So many of these (trying to recall them all lol) sound interesting. I want to get my hands on Monkey Beach and Bad Cree. And yeah, I had the same experience last year: I think a couple of the books I read were definitely more folk horror. But that’s ok! I bought another Melville work which is considered gothic. It’s called Pierre; or, the Ambiguities (weird title I know) only when it arrived I was disappointed in the font size. I don’t know how I’ll possibly read an entire novel in footnote size. Maybe I’ll share photos. I need to read up on Melville. Not to speak for him; I wouldn’t classify him as a downright abolitionist, but I think he was trying, and I think he had a heart, for sure. Interesting: the nods to Turn of the Screw. My daughter is reading that now, and I may reread it. That one actually scared me, which was fun. Yeah, there’s really not much to like in most of the characters in Wuthering Heights, but it’s so damned readable. It’s a force of nature! And as I’ve already mentioned, (read this in an essay) man and nature were not separate entities at all in this work. Pretty cool. I’m half way through or maybe more, of the Cambridge Companion. Thank you again for taunting me with it! Because I decided to pause in reading Madwoman in the Attic (again). I need to read Shirley! Apparently it’s about Emily, if I’m remembering this correctly.
@NicoleACottageWitchАй бұрын
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Yay! ⭐️ Folk horror is ok too, as long as it doesn’t get too gruesome! Yeah, I think Melville was sometimes trying to push back against easy stereotypes. I’ve read all the Brontë books but it’s been such a long time since I read Shirley that I can’t remember. Maybe I’ll reread that or Vilette next year. Bend Sinister is interesting because I believe it was his only ‘political’ novel, as he hated political novels. And of course Nabokov would use the index in an expansive way and turn it into art. I haven’t read Pale Fire yet; I’ve been saving it, because I know it will be a favorite. Have you read Series of Unfortunate Events? It’s like Nabokov for kids. My daughter wanted to read the series with me a few years ago. She stopped after 4 or 5 books, but I continued on. The Italo Covino book sounds like a trip! I’ll have to check it out. @NicoleACottageWitch2 ай бұрын
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Lots of audiobooks is the answer. Tom Jones I definitely listened to sped up. I can usually do 1.5-2x depending on the narrator but for parts of that one it was 2.5x because it was just so slow! It came up in the Cambridge companion to gothic fiction, though-Fielding wanted to be an ultra-naturalistic alternative to the pre-gothic romances that he didn’t think highly of! These were the first Joyce Carol Oates stories I’ve ever read but I am interested in more now. I read Unfortunate Events years ago and loved it. I remember thinking it was so clever and good fun.
