I'm a second-generation Greek-American. For seven, eight and nine, I learned "επτά," "οκτώ" and "εννέα." Would these be regarded as old-fashioned now?
@bettergreek16 күн бұрын
Both are used. επτά, οκτώ, εννέα are a little more used in written language

I heard that in the greek orthodox church they say "Πολυχρόνιον". They are wishing many years to the lord maybe.

I know that the alpha is often omitted in the first person of at least some of these verbs (αγαπώ, τραγουδώ, απαντώ). Is this also regarded as correct and, if so, is either version preferred?
@bettergreekАй бұрын
yes it can be omitted if you want. Both ways are correct. I think using άω instead of ώ is more common

Thank you, Thanasis, it is interesting to know these points, also when we will not be so strict. And in fact, it's corresponding with that what I have observed eating with our Greek friends ! 🎉

Nothing of what he says is a given. I'm a picky eater so if I go along with everybody eats everything I end up eating very little but still have to pay an equal part of the bill which is unfair. So I order my own plate and make sure its price is about my share of the bill. Nobody has objected to this so far. I have also found that the people who insist on plates for all are the people who eat the most, in essence taking advantage of this system to their benefit. Also equal sharing of the bill is up to a point. If someone eats or drinks a lot they are expected to pay a bigger share at the end. If they avoid that they will simply not get invited again. A good rule of thumb regarding tips is 10% of the bill, unless the bill was very high. And remember, if the owner of the business is serving you (not unusual in small family restaurants in the countryside) don't tip them, it is considered pointless and a little embarrassing. Tipping in Greece is a way to show you were satisfied with the service you received and not to supplement the server's wages as in the US. If you were not satisfied don't tip.

These are tricky. I already saw: Αγαπώ, τραγουδώ, απαντώ so there are two similar forms.

Let people be free. Greek culture is not about setting burdens like this to a person. Just talk with the others at the table of what you like as a personal dish to have and of what you would like to have as a shared dish with the others, talk also about whatever you want to ask, the people in the table know that you are a foreigner, they are not there to judge you but for you to feel as one of them. That's the Greek culture meaning.

Also, avoid ordering "variety" platters ("ποικιλίες"). Instead of ordering a platter for four persons, take some time to go through the menu and pick four different dishes. You get a better chance of tasting different stuff and it' s also more cost-effective. And most of all, as in any place, the most important thing is to check where the locals eat.
You can also order and have some small (meze) plates in the middle, but if you fancy having a main course dish by yourself, you are free to do so. No one will be offended, no worries. Regarding paying the bill, there are a couple of options: i) they have taken out for dinner, so they pay, or ii) you go out with your friends and split the bill.

Most of the time one does not have the oportunity to talk to a native Greek speaker so the only thing they have is books & videos but unles you go to Greece, whats the point in learning when you have no one to talk to. Anyway most Greek dont want to be in a conversation using both english and Greek words. Its either on or the other. They would rather you talk in english so they can improve their english rather than helping you improve your Greek.
