Emma!! Yay! So glad I happened to see this today. I began learning watercolor & color theory from you some years back. Then, had a period of time when I was mostly absent from painting. Just really getting back into it now. My art style has largely been realism but - I want to learn a looser style, for the purpose of using in illustrations. So this Dogtober timing is perfect! I struggle to get away from wanting to add a lot of detail, but aim to get past that. So glad you're doing these tutorials at this time. ~Sophia

Great video! Thanks! Another thing about the "Hue" thing that I heard of: it imitates the "original" color with different (and less expensive) pigments. That may be the reason for its presence in the Cotman line. Something to double check on. Cheers from Brazil!

Hi Alex! Yes for sure! Cost was also the reason why ultramarine blue was invented - really cool story behind it. Thanks for your kind words! 😊
@appleknocker56Ай бұрын
Is there any brand of ultramarine blue which doesn’t granulate as much? I’ve noticed when mixing that ultra granulates the mixes but haven’t found one that doesn’t granulate & don’t like using Indarthrone blue. Do love perm rose with ultramarine & like doing mountains.
@MirjamRoesliАй бұрын
Hi There is an ultramarine finest by Schmincke that is made to granulate less. As I understood they use a finer pigment (it is supposed to be grained more). I did buy it because I am on the hunt for a less granulating ultramarine as well. Do you have Instagram? If yes, tell me your handle and I could send you some pictures of my swatches if you would like. I don‘t think the ultramarine finest is what they suggest it should be, but still a bit less granulating. But after my internet research I was hoping for less grabulation than it was in the end.

You mentioned that Scarlet Lake is strong and staining. What are the difficulties you find with staining colors. I find it difficult to know when it’s best to use a staining or non staining watercolor
@PaintWildAcademyАй бұрын
Hi Sally!! Sorry for the super slow reply! I would say if you really like having the ability to lift colour cleanly off the page - be wary of staining colours. But you can always do a swatch test before you commit to a colour for a painting and see how it goes, might not be too bad :) I find that if the staining colours are also transparent, they're a little more forgiving - I use phthalo blue and quinacridone magenta as primaries and they're both staining! Hope that helps 😊

I love seeing your progress over the years, amazing how far you've come along and the improvements youve made, its funny how some you arent keen on are some of my favs lol this gives me optimism if i paint moreeee i will improve more, and to give things more a go as i have this fear of not doing well which is silly, but can put me off completing or even starting a painting. I have soo many half done, then start thinking of a next. I feel like getting to a point where i dont more onto another untill i have all tbe half done complete. A lot of your paintings are so beautiful, you are super talented and i loveee how youve kept them all over the years and remember so much about all your paintings 💖💖💖

Awww thank you so much, you're so sweet!!! I totally get that, I have those times too where fear stops me from starting. Sometimes we set the expectations too high for ourselves! I find doing something simple like swatching out some colours or setting myself a 10minute timer to quickly sketch something instead of committing to a full painting helps me push through that feeling - might help you too? Definitely keep at it! You've got this 👏🙌

I prefer Michael Wilcox's *Perfect Color Choices for the Artist,* *The Wilcox Guide to the Best Watercolor Paints,* and *Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green.* These three wonderful books, with their detailed and complete explanations of color theory as it relates to mixing watercolor paints, have been invaluable to my understanding of watercolors. Key to understanding color (again, as it relates to pigments used for painting) is to appreciate that every color of paint is actually a combination of two main colors-blue pigment, for example, is either a violet-blue (mostly blue with some violet as the secondary color) or a green-blue (mostly blue with some green as the secondary color). Likewise, yellow pigment is either an orange-yellow or a green-yellow. Continuing on with this example, to mix a green using blue and yellow, you'll need to mix together a green-blue and a green-yellow (not a violet-blue and an orange-yellow). *The Wilcox Guide to the Best Watercolor Paints* is an exhaustive description of all the different colors of pigment made by the 30 plus major worldwide brands of watercolor paint. I've also found the *Quiller Color Wheel* by Stephen Quiller (particularly the 27" by 27" poster size) to be an excellent resource for appreciating the dual-color nature of all pigments. I use the *Stephen Quiller Porcelain Palette* (13” X 13” X 1¼”) with the following watercolor pigments (all, but one, Schmincke Horadam Aquarell)-starting at the top and going clockwise around the palette leaving an empty well between each of the pigments: *Aureolin Hue 208* (an orange-yellow), *Lemon Yellow 215* (a green-yellow), *May Green 524* (a yellow-green), *Sap Green 530* (a blue- green), *Helio Cerulean 479* (a green-blue), *Ultramarine Finest 494* (a violet-blue), *Brilliant Blue Violet 910* (a blue-violet), *Brilliant Red Violet 940* (a red-violet), *Ruby Red 351* (a violet-red), *Transparent Red Deep 355* (an orange-red), *Saturn Red 359* (a red-orange), and *Chromium Orange 214* (a yellow-orange). In the double wells in each of the four corners of the pallet, starting with the two wells in top left-hand corner and going clockwise, I have: *Transparent Sienna 653* and *Transparent Ocker 657,* *Madder Brown 670* and *Transparent Umber 671,* *Ivory Black 780* and *Graphite Grey 788,* and *Payne’s Grey Bluish 787* and *Titanium White* (Daniel Smith-the only pigment that is not Schmincke). There’s lots of room for mixing pigments in the large center well of the porcelain pallet. All the watercolor pigments were chosen for their primary and their secondary colors as well as their transparency and permanence. Enjoy : )

At the beginning of my watercolor journey, I hated granulating and opaque watercolor paint. But as time goes by, I feel there is a time and place for them. I wouldn't use either on a botanical painting. But I live on the ocean. Granulating colors are a must for seascapes. Opaque colors are better on Yupo paper. My biggest rule is to utilize single pigment paint as often as possible. But that's just me. 😊

I pick a different set of primaries for every painting, according to what colours I need to be able to mix for that painting. But I wouldn't consider myself a beginer :P I keep around 30 paints on my palette at once, but I never use more than 4-7 on a single painting. That's how I keep from getting bored with using the same colours all the time, but still work with a limited palette to maintain colour harmony.
@PaintWildAcademy8 ай бұрын
Ooh clever, I love that approach! Do you find you have favourites out of those 30 that make an appearance in your limited palettes often?
@LindsayKitson8 ай бұрын
@@PaintWildAcademy I do, but I have kind of, categories of favourites - some that are just a go-to colour, some that I just like but are hard to find the right place for. Like, Nickel azo yellow is almost the only yellow I use, azo green is my go-to for mixing greens. But I really love cobalt turquoise and it makes a lovely shadow colour for white subjects, so sometimes I like to pick a white subject just so I can use it. I have about ten reds and pinks though, and I can't live without any of them, I'm always agonizing over which one is just the right red or pink for a particular painting.
@Nora-jt9zy8 ай бұрын
Thank you for a fantastic and comprehensive deep dive into both color theory and color mixing. I really enjoyed how you approached this ❤ I also find that ppl disagree slightly when it comes to determining on warm and cool colors, especially when it comes to blue. Could you do a breakdown on that? I find that there are different opinions on that. Some think that purple leaning blues are cold and green leaning blues are warm, because it’s leaning towards yellow, which they argue is warm, but when I try to research, I find arguments pointing in the direction towards purple leaning blues are warm. Since you gravitate towards cool colors, and have done a deep dive into colors, maybe this is something you can explain in a logical way?
@PaintWildAcademy8 ай бұрын
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! 😊 I can definitely go into that - I've got an upcoming video planned on split primary palettes so I reckon I'll chat about it then. Honestly though I think the easiest way I can explain it (and how I choose to think about it anyway) is that a colour's temperature is relative! A blue compared to red looks cool, but you could put a different blue next to the original blue, and all of a sudden the original blue looks warm in comparison. I think that people approach colour from different standpoints as well - some from an art background, others from a scientific, and others from fashion - and everyone thinks about it and sees it a bit differently. I've decided to stick with 'temperature is relative' rather than looking for a definitive answer - because like you said, everyone seems to have a different opinion! 😂 I look forward to covering it more soon though, thank you!

8:42 My guess, Phthalo Blue in Cotman is pretty strong, much stronger than the rose and lemon yellow, so it may make difficulties for beginner to learn color mixing. Ultramarine even when it is not the 'right primary color' is much manageable in mixing and it is also the most popular blue in traditional palette.

Bizarrely, Prussian blue (PB27) actually recovers from fading if you put it in shade with good airflow. And we all still enjoy the vibrancy of the last several hundred years of Prussian blue paintings. I don’t get the modern obsession with extreme lightfastness.
