Tamal is a singular item. Tamales is plural. Tamales are made with a corn based masa (dough) and you can include whichever fillings and flavorings you like from sweet to savory. They are very labor intensive, so are typically made for more special events like birthdays, religious events, and especially at Christmas. They are wrapped and steamed in the corn husks that are then removed to eat. I’ve made and eaten this since I was a little girl. So these were unwrapped tamales that were served for ease of use? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Much love, from California! P.S. Disneyland is better 😘

So, people started to say “tamale” as the singular version of “tamales”. BUT the correct way to actually say the singular version is “tamal”. So, technically “tamale” and “tamal” are the same thing, but just that “tamale” is not the correct way to say it.

The traditional way in Spanish is Tamal. Tamale was made more Americanized but it’s the same food as ‘tamal’. Current Hispanic generations use tamale but traditional or older generations use tamal.
